back again two weeks after your reply to say:
I read Iron Widow. easily one of my top 5 favorite books now. LITERALLY SOOOOOO GOOD. like incomprehensibly well-crafted and structured with characters that are fucking BONKERS and I am with them every step of the way. the author, xiran zhao, very clearly has so much love for their book and the story they wanted to tell. zhao is very upfront about content warnings but it does get very heavy at times!
i will check out your recommendations!! im in the middle of re-reading six of crows (bc why read a new book that’s been waiting on your shelf for months when you have a perfectly good book you’ve already read several times??) but im very intrigued. I follow this dude on tiktok who does obscure book recommendations and I always love the short, emotionally devastating ones
forgive me if I reply to your reply in a month, I’m never on tumblr
life’s been beating the shit out of me lately that i can go a few days without getting on tumblr….. but that usually means i compensate with twitter, and, i think it’s safe to say, twitter is a hell of a lot worse than tumblr now but it’s so easy to just Scroll mindlessly. it’s bad
i’m glad you liked Iron Widow!!!!!! i’m preoccupied with the Crave series by tracy wolff right now. someone donated that and the second book, Crush, so i snagged them because they reminded me of twilight and……. oh my god? they’re kinda really terrible (you can tell it hasn’t been that thoroughly edited) but i’m having so much fun reading them 😭😭😭😭😭 they’re entertaining!!!!! i did recently find out there’s gonna be, like, 7 books in this series though and it’s looking like i’m gonna commit myself to this dumb fucking series 😭😭
i had some friends who were obsessed with Six of Crows (and the other books set in that universe) but i never really got around to reading it or any of that author’s other works. her Ninth House book, written for adults, intrigued me but there’s just something about the dark academia Aesthetic that can… rub me the wrong way. i think that’s why it’s taken me so long to get around to reading it
my friends from work and i started a little book club where we all read similar books. it’s mostly treated as a joke because the first book we all wanted to read was a harlequin romance novel. (it was bad but not as boring as you would think.) and now, we’re reading……. amish books GDJDHDKD WHICH, strangely, is also a subset of harlequin books. the books you usually think of when it comes to harlequin books is their Harlequin Presents/Passion books. and the amish books are part of their Harlequin Love Inspired genre. i also know harlequin has a queer imprint where their authors have to pick a trope (like coffee shop, enemies to lovers, etc. (typical fanfic shit)) and then write a queer book about it……. if i was gonna write for harlequin…… it would be for that
where was i going with this…….. i don’t really like booktok/bookstagram or anything like that because they always seem to recommend the same books with little to no variation, at least from what i’ve seen recently. but it’s really good there’s people on there recommending obscure books. love me a good niche book that gut punches you nice and slow
