Pete Williams. NBC News correspondent and Assistant Secretary of Defense under Bush Sr., Williams was outed as gay in 1991. Despite the military ban on gay service members at the time, he kept his position as Assistant SecDef, and was actually supported by then-SecDef Dick Cheney in a rare moment of basic decency and humanity. He reported on a number of stories as a journalist, including the landmark decision by the Supreme Court to legalize same-sex marriage. A shame to retire in a world where that case (and others) could soon become obsolete. And the irony is that the very people he worked for in the Bush administration were the ones who helped to build the foundations upon which this social regression has become our new reality. Anyway, he announced his retirement yesterday, so now we’re going look at some pictures.
