I think the reason Corrie won over Eastenders in both Serial Drama Performance and Newcomer is because of the media.

Child abuse is never away from the media for long and 2019 was the 10th anniversary of Jade Goody’s death and we had the documentary on channel 4. So, Coronation Street just had more relevant storylines for Katie McGlynn and Peter Ash than Eastenders had for Danny Dyer and Max Bowden. Don’t get me wrong, male mental health IS still relevant, but the fact that Casualty didn’t win with their male mental health storyline either is very telling.
