This is Peter Barrow, JB's younger brother, whom Fitzjames lent some money to in Singapore in 1841. And I repeat: there was no scandal!

Mrs Julie Barrow and Miss Matilda Barrow,
It is my painful duty to inform you of the passing of your husband and brother, respectively, misters Peter and Frederick Barrow. During an assault on the enemy forces, Frederick was struck by a piece of shell. In an attempt to get his brother to safety, Peter too was hit, and the pair died of their injuries.
They passed valiantly defending the sacred cause of king and country, yet words do not suffice to express our grief over their passing.
Rest assured, the brothers have been laid to eternal rest in a military ceremony alongside several of their other fallen comrades, and their souls commended to the loving care of our Lord. I also enclose a recent photograph taken of the brothers reunited, in the hope that their memory may console you.

How happy I was to recieve your good news! And congratulations to Julie and Fred. My apologies for the late reply. As you have probably deduced from the newspapers, we have been ...rather busy. I am out in the trenches now, and while I am not allowed to go into too much detail, safe to say I am looking forward to a nice cup of tea and a warm bed when I return. You and Julie shall have to help me get all this blasted mud off my uniform. I haven’t been this filthy since Singwell tracked mud all over my Sunday best!
I was told there would be new recruits arriving in our trench today ahead of the big push - imagine my surprise to see Frederick and my old school chum Clarence! How strange to see them here - but welcome, of course, I have missed them so. We caught up and remenisced over our school days over a game of cards, and then slept side by side in the dugout - almost like when we used to share a room as boys. It is a wonderful comfort to have such familiar faces by my side, especially as plans are made to go over the top.
My big brother Peter is leaving home today. He says it is much easier for him to live in Britechester for school and that he will visit lots and lots, but I already miss him. Mother has said that she will take me to visit him in his new house for my birthday in a few months. I can’t wait...
Stuart was perhaps my dearest friend. I am so thankful to have known him these past few years, and will always cherish the memories of time spent fishing and waxing lyrical about the objects of our affections. His children, Emma, Natalia, and Theo, so close in age to my own, will be well looked after by their mother Angela. His absense will be felt profoundly. Stuart will forever rest next to his mother, Annabelle, in the Glimmerbook graveyard.
Fred and I start a new school year today. It is nice to be back, but everything is terribly different. A lot of my friends are too old for our little schoolhouse now, including Clarence and Evie. My new classmates seem agreeable - The Baxter siblings we met last month are in our class - but I do look forward to being able to spending time with my old chums when I am bigger.
Imagine my surprise when the boys returned from their swim with a dog in tow! Apparently the poor thing had been whining for food by the lake, and they took such pity on her that they managed to lead her all the way back home, just to beg me to let them keep her. I put on a show of hum-ing and haw-ing but I could never have turned them down. Even little Matilda took to the hound quickly! I let the boys name her on account of their compassion - they chose the name Singwell, on account of her tuneful howling. A little on the nose, but a fine name nonetheless.
