Final Project: Artist Statement

‘The Season’ is a jazz improv group consisting of five students from the University of Texas at Dallas. The group was formed for the purpose of a single performance at CentralTrak, an artist residency located in downtown Dallas. This book is a collection of photographs taken by myself, and it serves as a visual documentation of the month leading up to the performance on March 25th of 2016. Theses photographs capture the process of musical creation, the tools utilized by musicians, and the social interaction that occur between artists. Viewers will be able to see the visuals and feel the emotions present at the rehearsal sessions and the performance, and ultimately feel as if they were a part of ‘The Season’ through the month long journey.

Artist Presentation

TV Cello (1971) by Nam June Paik. Paik is often labeled as the ‘father of video art,’ but he was also a composer, and created this art piece for his composition “Concerto for TV Cello and Videotapes” and performances with cellist Charlotte Moorman (above).

These are recordings of my two year old nephew. I just wanted to make something humorous, but at the same time I wanted to show how big of a role music plays in videos to convey moods along with the visuals. the video consists of three scenes, each in a before (as is) and after (with music) format.

Project 2

I was inspired by one of the examples presented during class, where the image seemed to continue from one image to the next. I wanted to incorporate that technique for this project, about which the message is music. The upper triptych shows three different performers, playing different images, and they are connected by the continuation of instruments present in the photos. The lower triptych presents the three body parts that are involved with music: ears(listening), eyes(seeing), and mouth(singing).

Studio Day

I have actually changed plans for the final project, and have decided to work on a photobook instead. I am currently in a jazz group that will be performing at the UTD program at CentralTrak, and I am photographing the rehersals, and am also planning on photographing the event itself.

Art Event: Kim Stringfellow

I attended the photo exhibit “American Landscape and The American Dream,” and the corresponding lecture by Kim Stringfellow on March 8th. The photos were of rural landscapes, some featuring old, broken-down buildings and houses in isolation, as well as mountainsides. All of the photos were taken in daylight, and include nature imagery, such as mountains, desert fields, forests and cloudy skies.

The photos were well taken in high quality, and do not seem digitally tampered with in any way. They are basic, straightforward, and do not utilize any unusual angles, focus techniques, or color manipulation. Some of the photos do manage to capture interesting imagery, such as weird cloud formations. I would not add or take away anything from the photographs, as I believe that they are interesting, and successfully capture the visuals and convey the intended messages of the photographer.

The backstory and intent of the photographs were explained by Kim Stringfellow during her lecture. The photos are all from California, and they serve to showcase the highlights and the history of their respective locations, such as the Salton Sea, and the Jackrabbit Homestead. I, without knowing the history behind the photographs, simply saw images showcasing interesting locations that I’ve never been to, but after learning of the locations and the full story I find it much more interesting. Overall, I found the photographs interesting, and the story and history behind them only enriched my experience more.

In-Class Exercise: Photobook Review Response

I reviewed “Right of Passage” by Martha Rosler, and “Aperture” by Loretta Lux. “Right of Passage” presents straightforward photographs of various roadways taken from within a moving vehicle. They serve to capture construction, various vehicles, road types, and situations of the roadway seen from a driver’s perspective. “Aperture” is much more surreal in comparison, and it presents multiple images of children and a few adults photoshopped into various environments. The images are blatantly unreal, and very calm, almost somber in the visuals: the backgrounds, colors, and expressions of the subjects are all very mellow.
