Sooo, I had a dream two nights ago and it included two of your characters @the-golden-comet

I think it was Peter and Benji in an ad for burgers?

There was a deep male narrator voice, I forgot what it said, and Benji and Peter were taking stuff out of the burger to annoy each other lovingly or something. There was also this really big piece of weird looking cheese in the burger, lol.

Hello sorry to bother you, I have a question for you. What do you feel about historians making absolute statements regarding hypotheticals? I am reading Peter Hart's Galipoli (which I mostly enjoy, I find reading accounts from the men on the ground is far more powerful than officers and staff far removed from the battle) and while enjoy it, he opens the book by saying "the Galipoli campaign would never have worked and even if it did it wouldn't have changed anything...the only thing that mattered was the western front (in so many words)." And while I don't disagree I was always taught that we never really know what could have happened, and that we are basing an alternate conclusion on supposition. It's a pedantic thing to criticize I know but it just annoys me and I feel like the proper answer should be something along the lines of "we don't know what would have happened had it played out differently, all we can do is examine the facts and make analysis of what actually happened." Am I reading too much into this or a valid critique of making bold statements like this?

In general, I'm pretty solidly against absolutes when it comes to historical writing in general. Counterfactuals are hard to deal with because, obviously, they didn't happen. What would have actually transpired is anyone's guess.

To deal with Hart specifically, he's coming down on one side of a debate that's been around since 1914, the Easterners VS the Westerners.

Those in the decision making circles during the war were generally split into two camps on how to best win the war. Those who argued that as Germany was the main enemy the war could only be won by defeating them in the main theatre, the Western Front. These were the Westerners and were mostly senior military officers like Haig, Robertson and Kitchener.

Opposing them were the Easterners, including many politicians, who thought that Germany would be forced to surrender if its allies were knocked away, and that this would be less costly than forcing a decision on the Western Front. Churchill is probably the best known of the Easterners, writing to Asquith the Prime Minister in 1914: “Are there not other alternatives than sending our armies to chew barbed wire in Flanders?” But it also included the future PM Lloyd-George and secretary of the Imperial War Cabinet Maurice Hankey.

Hart himself isn't a professionally trained historian, and though he's been writing history for a long time it's not academic history and has a few of the problems that popular history tends to have. Particularly open biases that he passes off as facts. In this case he's coming down clearly as a Westerner without explaining that there's still a debate about these things.

Broadly though, I think his view is right. I don't think there was much chance of success at Gallipoli, and I doubt it would have knocked the Ottomans out of the war had it succeeded. But stranger things have happened, and framing an opinion as a fact is a bit shit in history writing.
