Tony knows it's something important when Pepper asked him if they could talk in that weirdly stoic voice of hers. Honestly he doesn't know what he expected. Maybe another major Fuckup of his, a drop in the stocks of Stark Industries, maybe even bad news from Rhodey or Peter. He didn't expect this. God… He really did't expect Pepper to tell him she's pregnant.
He probably should have expected it. They talked about having a kid. About becoming parents. He just didn't expect it to happen so soon.
He should probably be happy. Hell. He would probably be happy if it weren't for the insane amount of panic flowing trough his system right now, cancelling every possible response he could muster regarding the topic.
What if he hurts his kid? What if he breaks his kid? What if he just fucks this kid up in every possible way? What if he becomes his father? He can't do that to his kid. He can't!
Pepper is still staring at him. She's probably waiting for a reaction. She probably thought he would react a lot more happy. Shit. What if he's already fucking shit up? His wife is pregnant! And he's just sitting here, staring at her and wondering 'what if'.
“Tony?”, Pepper finally asks tentatively. “It's okay. You're gonna be a great dad, alright? You hear me?”
She sounds like she knows exactly what's going on in his brain. Well, knowing her she probably does. It doesn't really help. Her telling him that he's gonna be a great dad. She could say anything just to calm him down. Technically Tony knows that. But the 'what if' still lingers.
Nonetheless he really tries to calm down. It just doesn't work because what if he was not a good dad? He would fuck up a child. An entire life. That's a lot of responsibility. That is going to be his child for the rest of his life.
Everything he'll do wrong will influence and shape this kid. He will be responsible for their future and safekeeping. Something more important than his own life!
He doesn't break out of his panic until he hears Pepper talking again. While he was spiraling in his panic she must have moved him towards the couch and made him sit down on it. Now she's sitting close to him and stroking his face. She has a soft smile on her lips and when she realizes that Tony's looking at her with panic filled eyes, she softly kisses his lips before smiling at him again.
“Oh Tony. You don't need to worry so much. You're already a great father to Peter. Another addition to our small family won't be a problem.”
Peter's name is what finally gets his attention. “Peter?”
“Of course Tony. You think I don't notice how you're talking about the kid? You're his father figure. He absolutely idolizes you. And you're always looking out for him. You don't need to worry about being a dad, because you already are one. You just need to learn how to change diapers now and you're good to go. But you won't be alone. You have me. And I'm sure Rhodey is going to be just as excited. And Happy will act grumpy but he will absolutely adore our kid, just like he does with Peter. And Peter! Peter will be the best big brother there is in the world. He will love helping you.”
It takes a moment, but deep inside Tony knows that Pepper's absolutely right. He would love to deny being a father for Peter. But he just can't. He's the kid's father figure and he couldn't fathom anything better.
He will have a kid and he will not fuck it up, because his whole family will help him. He will give his best, just to prove everyone wrong. To prove that he can be a good dad. To prove that he's worthy of this child and of Peter.
The day they tell Peter about the baby, Tony is super nervous. They wanted to tell the family first, before the rest of the world will undoubtedly find out. When they talked about who to tell first, they quickly settled on Peter. They might have told Rhodey, Peter and Happy together, but Rhodey was in Washington and Happy was on vacation.
Besides, Peter is the one who's around them the most and Tony doesn't really know how long he can shut up and keep a secret.
Peter seems suspicious when he enters the top floor where Pepper is sitting in the living room and Tony is going towards the elevator to greet Peter immediately. He's smiling and super nervous, but he can't wait to tell Peter that he's going to be a brother.
As soon as Peter steps out of the elevator with one of his feet, Tony hugs and ushers him towards the living room at the same time, where Pepper's still sitting and laughing at the display of Tony's happiness.
Before Tony can press Peter into the cushions of the sofa, Peter frees himself to carefully hug the sitting Pepper while whispering into her ear. “Did he get too much coffee again?”
Pepper and Peter share a secretive smile. “When doesn't he?”
Before they can make more fun of Tony's happiness, he winds his arm around Peter's back to force him to finally sit down.
“We want to tell you something.”
“You found the secret stash of coffee Dum-E and U hoard and drank all of it? Yeah. I can tell.”
“What? No. We wanted to talk... wait. They do what?”
Pepper and Peter both burst out laughing.
“Oh. You didn't know? What do you think where all the coffee went?”
Tony stares at them, then starts to blink slowly before opening and closing his mouth a few times. Then he quietly murmurs: “I just thought I drank it all.”, which sends Pepper and Peter into a new set of giggles.
“In that case you're drinking way too much coffee.”
For how giddy Tony feels about the news, he can't wait for them to calm down and stop laughing. But at the same time it's really nice just watching the two of them giggling like little kids. Even if it's on his expanses. It's just nice to watch their happiness. And maybe even laugh a bit himself.
When they finally calm down, they're all sitting on the same sofa, Peter leaned into Pepper's side while grinning widely at Tony.
“We have some really big news Petey.”
Pepper smiles at Tony over Peter's head. He can see a happy gleam in her eyes and sees how she presses Peter closer to her. Peter looks at them with big, round eyes. He's probably about to ask for the news when Tony finally can't hold it anymore.
“Pepper's pregnant. There's a baby on the way.”
For a moment time seems to freeze. Then a giant grin spreads over Peter's face and his head whips around to look at Pepper. His eyes dart to her stomach, before going back to her face again and then looking at Tony again.
“You're serious? You're really... There's going to be a small Stark?”
Pepper laughs before she starts nodding enthusiastically.
“Yeah. I suspected a few weeks ago but we went to the first doctor's appointment just yesterday and got it confirmed. There really is a small Stark on the way.”
Peter laughs freely. His eyes twinkle with happiness and his grin seems to cover his whole face. Suddenly he jumps onto Tony and hugs him so hard it feels as if Tony's spine will break. But then Peter stops and turns to Pepper before hesitating.
“You can hug her Peter. Just be careful.”
Pepper laughs at that before dragging Peter into a hug that seems just as tight as the one for him.
“Nonsense. I'm not a porcelain doll. I'm not gonna break. And neither is the little one. Tony's just a worry ward.”
Tony watches them for a second before shrugging his shoulders.
“Well maybe I am. But it's my first time baby and I might be nervous. Now make some space for one more to cuddle.”
Following his words he spreads his arms to envelope both Pepper and Peter in a big hug. They both laugh before making some space for him.
It's more uncomfortable than not, how they're sitting on the sofa, all three of them enveloped in a shared hug. But to be honest Tony wouldn't change a thing about this situation.
Maybe Pepper was right. Tony already has the role of a dad. He just needs to stop worrying. But he's sure Peter would be able to help with that.
