moments we had

this place was dusty and smoky and warm in a way that sticks to the back of your throat we sat in the grass after midnight in the soft september air so many late nights where you let me talk and i didn’t doubt you listened

we have had early mornings, soft mornings, terrible mornings. mornings that didn’t start until afternoon, mornings still drunk from the night before. mornings with red eyes and messy hair and cold feet bleary eyed we mutter greetings to each other as sickly sunlight sneaks through the shades

the first times we kissed we were drunk smeared red lipstick kisses, yours mine theirs. cheeks shoulders collarbones, painted with carefree affection

reading poetry books on buses we were lost and found between transit stops one dollar, two dollars, loonies and toonies back and forth bus fare paid back with a drink on wednesday

smoke curled up from your lips like an incense offering to a greedy god a prayer from the unrepentant, accepted nonetheless eyes of arrogant authority, judging but unwilling to intervene
