             I can see why Levi picked Petra for his squad. I can see it in all of             them, really, Levi has a good eye for character and strength but              Petra tips the scales of the team back in balance. She challenges              the brute force of her male squad mates.

             I’m not trying to suggest that Petra lacks the physical strength the             boys have, far from it. She packs a punch, she’s agile and fast             and determined and loyal just as they are. But she’s got more.              She doesn’t hide her compassion and kindness and care and it              makes a world of difference.

             She openly worries about her team mates and even soldiers              outside squad Levi. She’s the gentle touch to Levi’s bluntness.

             She’s the sunshine after the storm, hope after the clouds depart.             Perhaps I’m putting a little too much on her shoulders with this. She’s             merely human.

          Hazel eyes lock with hers and tired hands tense around the warm          cup of tea. Her nails scrape against the smooth surface, knuckles          white against the dark colour of the cup.

          The silence that fills the room weighs Petra’s words down, their           weight slumps her shoulders and Zoë breaks eye contact, looking          into the wobbly surface of the drink instead. 

          It does seem like its the hour before dawn again and for a split           moment she’s almost ready to say that. Eren pops into her mind          and despite herself she finds the burn of hope swelling in her chest.          It did seem dark, it did seem lost; the path they spent years clearing           for Wall Maria was lost but they gained an ally so unlikely and           unthinkable that it opened so many new possibilities. 

          She’s smiling when she looks up, tension rolling from her shoulders.

                            “ It’s darkest before dawn, right? I think dawn                          might be closer than we believe. It’s getting brighter. “
