Alex Lawrence was born to muggle parents in 1946 and the moment his father found out that there was something special about Alex, he took him away from his mother and introduced him to life on sea. Alex’s father, Alexander, was a notorious pirate, his pirate fleet ‘’The Red Queen’’ known across the entire globe as something to be feared. Alexander dove straight into the magical world when he realised it existed, pushing for more and more information until his name fell into the wrong hands.
After thoroughly researching the man’s name, ex-followers of Grindelwald found Alexander before he could find them. They used the power hungry pirate king for their own cause, passing him and his son onto what would become the Death Eaters. Alex grew up being groomed to become a loyal follower to Voldemort’s cause. They introduced him to dark magic and learned of his gifted talent and interest in dark creatures which they fully planned on using for their own cause.
Alex was kept from Dumbledore for a fair few years, moving about from place to place until he was fifteen and sent to Hogwarts where he was sorted in Slytherin. Alex furthered his studies at the school, banding with the Death Eater’s children where his dislike towards people started. He learned that children were extremely cruel, especially towards those with tainted blood. Which he was one of. Alex fought for his place in Slytherin by any means possible, including the use of his fists as well as his wand.
It wasn’t until he turned twenty-one when Alex looked up his mother and visited her unbeknownst to his father.He secretly kept in contact with her for eight months until Alexander found out. Alex’s behaviour had started to change during that time, he became more rebellious against the Death Eater group that was starting to form larger and more powerful. Alexander turned to Voldemort himself, begging him to get rid of the distraction in Alex’s life.
His wish was granted and it was perhaps cruel fate that Alex was the first one to find his dead mother. He was distraught and filled with vengeance. Alexander’s hopes had been that with his mother gone, Alex would return back to his side. But Voldemort had other plans set for the muggle pirate king. Now that Alex was old enough, He had no more use for his muggle father. Alex was tipped off by the Death Eaters that it had been his father who called the hit on his mother.
It was a stormy night when Alex took his father out on sea and killed him. He returned taking the position of Captain over The Red Queen and her fleet for four years, allowing Voldemort to use his ships and pirates for the Death Eaters cause. Under Alex’s hard rule, chaos ensued everywhere, one by one any pirate with no or little magical blood disappeared without a trace until only those with strong magical abilities remained.
But as the four years passed, Alex grew less and less interested in the cause, finding himself feeling more resentful towards the damage he and his pirates were causing to the world. He no longer found pleasure in the recruiting, violence and fear he was spreading. At twenty-five Alex had enough and disappeared without a word.
Albus Dumbledore found him fighting off mummies and Death Eaters deep in an Egyptian tomb when Alex was twenty-nine. Dumbledore made short work of it and then apparated the two of them to Hogsmeade where he granted Alex sanctuary in Hogwarts if he took up a teaching job. Alex reluctantly agreed, starting that very week as the Ancient Studies professor.
Alex dislikes large groups of people, preferring to keep to himself and out the way of potential judgement and questions about his previous life. Dumbledore’s eagerness for Alex to join the Order is well known to him, but after the life he has lead, Alex has no wish to choose a side anymore.
Because of the kindness extended to him by Dumbledore in his hour of need, Alex has an open door policy in his office.
It is known that Alex has granted any student sanctuary and immunity the moment they step over the threshold into his office. He has sealed the promise with an ancient spell, unknown to anyone but him (and presumably Dumbledore) of what kind. The spell does not allow for any kind of offensive attack to be performed within those four walls, magical or non magical.
Alex teaches Ancient Studies, an extra-curricular taught to the sixth and seventh years although he has extended it temporarily to the fourth and fifth years before. He also from time to time fills in for Professor Binns’ History of Magic classes. Alex is very hands on during his lessons, he is encouraging and patient with his students. He has also been known to teach students hand to hand combat as well as with other of his personal weaponry in his spare time, believing that it’s import to be able to defend yourself even when you have been disarmed.
He allows them to practice ancient magic during his lessons, and when he can obtain permission he takes out small groups on field trips. But he has also made it very clear that the spells learned under his close observation are not permitted to cast outside of his classes.
Alex is likely to be found in his office on the 6th floor or out by the Black Lake, either overlooking it or in the water.
He swims everyday, no matter what the season or temperature.
He has long hair, often partly tied back in a ponytail. It has also been seen braided back out of his face before.
Alex has facial hair and his ears are pierced. He also wearing a silver chain with a cross on it that used to belong to his mother, he never takes it off.
Alex isn’t a fan of the traditional uniform, more often opting to say fuck it to the system and walk around in his casual clothing (depicted below).
Even when in smart clothing, Alex will be wearing his leather boots and nobody can convince him to wear anything else of his feet.
Mainly because Alex keeps a knife in his boot at all times. The same knife he used to kill his father with. (my man has a morbid sense of sentimentalism).
He is also gifted in wandless magic, but opts never to use it if he can help it due to its unpredictable nature.
Since his sanctuary was granted within Hogwarts, the Death Eaters have stopped hunting him, content enough with the knowledge of where he is and that he is not joining the Order.
Alex still has connections within the Death Eaters, mainly with people that still owe him favours.
He does not have the Dark Mark due to never fully submitting to the Death Eaters, but because his forearms are usually covered up, of course chinese whispers through the castle have made a lot of the students believe that he does have it.
