Becky Chambers, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
He reads books so much they wear holes in his pockets, he’s a odd kind of smooth, he’s got a great sense of snarky humor, he’s absorbed in his book but obviously has also been paying attention to Vin, and he doesn’t like the nobles!?! Vin!!! Call dibs already!!!!
Vin froze. Elend smiled nonchalantly.
‘Lord! He’s either incredibly smooth or socially incompetent.’ It was disturbing that she couldn’t determine which.
Man oh man do I hope the indiscernible difference between smooth and socially incompetent is a common theme for this guy because I love it.
“I’ve got to go,” she said, turning toward the stairwell.
“Ah, well then,” Elend said, “back to reading it is.” He gave her a half wave of farewell, but he had his book open before she passed the first step.
I’m trapped between believing his nose really is that stuck in that book, and that he’s using it as a shield between him and a pretty girl. Maybe both?

And Delphi Diggory had such a great ring to it... What sort of bad fanfic is this? I mean time travel, new prophecies, horrible AUs... I can't do this.
