PWHL Expansion Phase 1 Thoughts
In general, more goalies were protected than I thought there would be (except for the Sirens who I thought would protect Osborne). It makes sense. I just did not prioritize goalies when creating my protection predictions. In addition to not prioritizing goalies enough, I know I also didn't consider contracts as much as I should have, even if that less obviously impacted my predicted results.
By the numbers, I predicted 15/24 protected players correctly. This amounted to an average of 1.71 correct per team if you did not include Montreal since that guess was more just listening to rumors. (My average correct per team if Montreal was included was only 1.875 per team, so not a substantial amount better.)
I continue to be stressed out by the expansion process. That seems inevitable at this point.
Minnesota Frost conjecture below the cut:
So I did a thing.
your three expansion essentials, IMO
Kyle cushmans gigantic fucking data sheet with contract info stats and everything, in particular the offseason depth tab - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Yd2UnTm4fqr6-nrlZ6UrF54ky5s92fFjX_Da9BWM0fE/
PWHL expansion guide full detail - https://assets.contentstack.io/v3/assets/bltebdb4296e05d53db/bltfcb337628a75490b/6a1deb51b883dd2b2f675f28/PWHL_-2026_Expansion_Player_Distribution_Process-Rules.pdf its long, its annoying, its convoluted, but you need all the details
pwhl salary list - this does not give full context, as its only last years salaries and as we know theres players whos contracts vary drastically from year to year, but it can at least illuminate some decision making both for protection and expansion choices https://www.pwhlpa.com/salary-guide
Additional resource I like is the data visualization of the PWHL Salary list by 365HockeyGirl: (It's the same info as the pwhlpa salary guide but you can sort by player, team and has a distribution scatter plot)
https://365hockeygirl.beehiiv.com/p/how-much-do-pwhl-players-actually-make?utm_source=365hockeygirl.beehiiv.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=pwhl-expansion-live-tracker&_bhlid=9910af3dbb2c16e3362029c3118976fc9867c16e
All this talk about PWHL protection lists but who’s protecting my sanity. Makes you think.
I know lots of families share accounts so it’s not weird but I love my family’s shared Audible account. My dad had a 1.5 hour commute for most of my childhood so he listened to so many audiobooks. This started with cassettes from the library, then cds he could purchase and finally evolved into an audible account in 2011. Since the account is 15 years old, we have 407 library with books that span the gambit from massive biographies, entrepreneurship, self help, summer romance, fantasy, NYT best sellers, classics assigned for school, etc. As we’ve gotten older, my sisters and I have had more of a say in what we add to the library. Sometimes this means consulting to see if the others would read it too, but most of the time this just means asking for permission to use a credit than getting whatever we want.
if you vote me for president i vow to make everything the ocean again. no more land only ocean. this will solve all of our problems and replace them with new, far more interesting problems
I heard it was that time of year again.
“As Fast As Her” by Kendall Coyne Schofield makes me feel so emotional about the PWHL. The book ends with “To date, no women’s professional hockey league exists that gives women the opportunity to make a living playing the game. Barriers will continue to be broken.” The book was published in 2022 and features the creation of the PWHPA in the epilogue. It’s almost surreal how much has changed since then. The PWHL has completed three incredible seasons. Kendall got to hoist the Walter Cup twice. The league continues to grow in popularity; we’re in the middle of an expansion that is making me lose my mind. The release of the player’s salaries makes it abundantly clear that we still have a ways to go before all players in the league can make a living playing hockey. However we’re so much closer than we were even 5 years ago.

Already know I wanna send this to people on June 1
I don’t believe in sports betting. However I do like the mental exercise of guessing which players are going to be protected in this expansion. I’m curious how my predictions compare both to others and the reality. One thing I’m very aware of after doing this: there will be some big names up for grabs for the expansion teams.
Boston Fleet: Aerin Frankel, Megan Keller, Alina Müller
Minnesota Frost: Taylor Heise, Kelly Pannek, Kendall Coyne Schofield (if she hasn’t indicated that she wants to go to Detroit), Lee Stecklein (if KCS did indicate she wants to go to Detroit)
Montréal Victoire: Marie-Philip Poulin, Laura Stacey and Ann-Renée Desbiens (I think I read that Montreal explicitly announced this, but don’t have a source readily available for that.)
New York Sirens: Kayle Osborne, Sarah Fillier, Casey O’Brien (Alternatively if the Sirens wanted to do something a little out there, they could try to bring back Jessie Eldridge. I don’t think there will be a lot of protecting players who aren’t on the current roster but recognize it’s a possibility, and think it’s more likely if a team is trying to get back former players.)
Ottawa Charge: Gwyneth Phillips, Brianne Jenner, Rebecca Leslie
Seattle Torrent: Hillary Knight, Hannah Bilka, Alex Carpenter
Toronto Scepters: Daryl Watts, Blayre Turnbull, Renata Fast
Vancouver Goldeneyes: Sophie Jacques, Hannah Miller, Sarah Nurse
May we all survive what is to come with our mental sanity intact.
June 3 EDIT: I was right about players who were bolded.
gimme kiss 😙
I’m reading Kendall Coyne Schofield’s autobiography and realizing the long relationship she has with Manon Rhéaume. I had previously only thought we would lose KCS was if Chicago got a team, and that KCS would be a no-brainer for MN Frost to protect. Now, I’m not so sure. What do you think our odds are for keeping our captain?
Note: I realize that KCS likely isn’t alone in having a connection to Manon. KCS just emphasized how their relationship “continues to this day” (AKA the publication of As Fast As Her in 2022). I mean the fact KCS also was kicked out of Michigan hockey as a child because of a rule made explicitly to prevent her from playing may also be a factor. I don’t pretend to know her feelings. This was just something I hadn’t even let myself consider before.
Last day of May!!!
I have no idea where I found this but I’ve had it on my camera for like 9 months
