So, I just found ununnilium's old ask about how the Stars arc shared tones or themes with the live-action Sailor Moon. How much would you agree with that now?
(Here’s the ask in question!)
First of all, congratulations on waiting the 6 months or so it took me to get through the whole manga!
The Stars Arc and PGSM both stare apocalypse directly in the face. Other arcs threaten the destruction of the world, but don’t confront that reality. In PGSM, Princess Sailor Moon doesn’t want to live in a world without Endymion, and thus is intent on its annihilation. In Stars, Usagi must choose between a world with conflict, or no world at all. The question that arises is: what makes a universe worth keeping? And, in both cases, the answer is friendship. A world that makes you sad, or allows evil to exist, doesn’t need to be obliterated. These negatives can be outweighed by the positives, sitting on opposite sides of the cosmic scale. I’ve already talked too much about the cycle of love and strife on this blog, but that won’t stop me from saying I consider it to be the backbone of these particular versions of Sailor Moon.
I know reading about other people’s dreams is boring, but
last night I dreamed I was making my family watch the PGSM finale with me and I discovered there was an extra 40 minutes that I had never seen
in this extra 40 minutes, the fate of the earth is decided by a karaoke battle between Beryl, Serenity, and Kunzite (standing in for Metallia)
and yes, the show makes you listen to the entirety of Minako Aino’s “C’est la Vie” three different times
Beryl wins
Sailor Luna has to sacrifice herself à la Gurgi from The Black Cauldron in order to reboot the universe
Mamoru wakes up in Karaoke Crown with no memory of what happened. The first thing a newly reincarnated Mamoru does is passionately defend his choice of turtleneck sweater to Motoki
Usagi finds him again, with tears in her eyes, and says “Sailor Luna died for this”
I somehow have to explain to my family why I enjoy this
Rei is the exact opposite of a useless lesbian. She is in fact a very useful lesbian.
I know I invested many hours of my life rooting for Usagi Tsukino to win, but now Beryl comes at me with “I just wanted to rebel against the bourgeoisie and seize the means of production” and it’s seriously making me reconsider my alliances
“NEVER RETURNED THE FAVOR”
USAGI WHAT ON THIS DEAD GREY EARTH ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
YOU BEFRIENDED EVERY SAD LONELY GIRL WHO EVER CROSSED YOUR PATH
YOU GAVE THEM UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND TRUST WHEN NO ONE ELSE WOULD
YOU MADE PEOPLE WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING
YOU’VE RETURNED THE FAVOR THOUSANDS OF TIMES OVER
YOU’VE NEVER STOPPED RETURNING THE FAVOR
YOU’RE DOING IT RIGHT NOW
The soap opera angle wasn’t working. This is a minimalist art house film now.
Am I the only one that thinks that what would've made PGSM even better is if Mamoru and Usagi DIDN'T end up together in the end? Not just because I ship Usagi with any of her Senshi (although I totally do >.>) but like I feel it would've made the message of the whole "The past and destiny doesn't define you" message much stronger. I mean, Minako learned to move on from the past and value her current life, I feel it would've made it stronger if Mamoru and Usagi also broke free from each other.
THAT WOULD BE FUCKING GREAT
The Senshi agree that they are willing to lay down their lives for their princess’s miracle romance (and all it represents)
All the Shitennou die protecting their master and/or his moon gf
Beryl lets herself die because she can’t be with Mamoru
Serenity chooses to destroy the planet instead of live in a world without Mamoru in it. The earth becomes dust. Nothing exists anymore.
Mamoru and Usagi bring everything back through their combined love for the world they lived in
“you know what? let’s just be friends”
