Thinking about how much more I’d love Lucas’ character if he had identity crisis’.

He’s always shifting between adult and child forms, but it also means he doesn’t truly know what state he’s actually in. If you look back on his flashbacks with his teacher, he’s always in a child form even though they’ve been together for so long (for novel context, it’s implied he got married, had kids, they died, and then his death soon after meaning a good ten years at least. I don’t even remember if they died of old age or sickness, but either way it’s possible it may even be longer). He might actively only be in his adult form when interacting with nobles. Lucas should be a very insecure person, lost in his own self as he lost himself long ago and no longer knows how to be himself, or when he is he doesn’t even know if he’s being real.

An example being Jack from Pandora Hearts. His motivations for everything was purely selfishness, from his lack of identity fueling his desire to bring back the only person who made him realize he was human—not because of love or anything like that, but because she made him realized how real his hate for her was. There was also his dilemma if he was being true with Oswald, Vincent, and Gil. He loved them, but then he also realized that he was so willing to use them and hurt them. “How do I really know if I truly thought of you guys as friends, if I’m about to kill you right now without any hesitation or regret?”

If Lucas was written like that, he’d feel so much more real. Still overpowered, but at least he’d still feel like a character and not a plot device purely used for defeating the villain or a love interest.
