Just re-read one of my Phoenix and Hangman ficlets (the one that basically exists because I thought of Hangman referring to Bob as "the other boyfriend" and was amused)
And now I've realized that clearly the progression from there is Hangman calling Phoenix "babe", which would naturally make Bob Babe's Other Boyfriend
Phoenix and Hangman, still very much in the honeymoon phase of dating, try to flirt covertly with each other so Bob doesn't feel too much like a third wheel. 400 words, rated T. They got through a whole snippet without cussing, I'm so proud of them.
Set immediately after Bombs Away. I expect you can enjoy this if you haven't read it, but it will make more sense if you read that first. Is this enough to justify adding a chapter to Bombs Away?
After Bob sends the picture, he, Phoenix, and Hangman return to their previous activities. They are certainly all curious as to how Rooster and Maverick will react - and if it will immediately start a chain reaction if Rooster decides to forward the picture to, say, Payback - but they each manage to contain their curiosity more successfully than Rooster and Mav. Bob goes back to his crossword, and Phoenix to her book.
Hangman, slightly more energized than his lazy mood before the interruption, returns his head to Phoenix's lap, but starts making a game of trying to distract her with small and plausibly deniable touches. Bumping his nose against her stomach. Placing an arm beneath his head and sliding his thumb along the inside of her thigh. A fake yawn that he uses as cover to brush his other arm again her breast.
A pointed look from her tells him she knows exactly what he's doing. The slight tremor of laughter she feels tells her that he knows she knows.
Hangman pulls out his phone. Phoenix assumes it's to see if anyone has started asking him about veracity of the photo, until her own phone buzzes.
If you're going to go to dinner with Bob, the least you could do is let me have some alone time with you now
Phoenix looks down at him. He smiles invitingly.
I'm not kicking Bob out. That would be incredibly rude. And obvious
Phoenix feels him laugh again as he reads her response.
He knows I'm your boyfriend
I think we can safely assume that he knows I sometimes want to get you naked
Phoenix is debating with herself whether to reply Only sometimes? to that, which she can almost guarantee will result in Hangman taking matters into his own hands and kicking Bob out himself, when Hangman's phone rings.
The way he answers tells her it's Coyote, who won't be calling to ask about the picture (assuming it's reached him) because he already knows about them. After a minute, Hangman says, "Yeah, that sounds good," and a beat later, "No, she's taking the other boyfriend to dinner."
Phoenix elbows him again, though more lightly this time, and Bob snorts.
A/N: There's probably more story here but I'm supposed to be working on something that's due tomorrow, so I should really get to that. This one hundred percent started because I though of Hangman referring to Bob as Phoenix's 'other boyfriend' in a conversation with Coyote while working on Bombs Away, but then I couldn't make it fit
