Phantom Friday...
...goes vertical...
... briefly.
The Phantom could go straight up, but not for very long. Even with the mighty J-79 engines in zone 4 (maximum) afterburner, with any sort of a load the thrust to weight ratio was less than one... speed would begin to bleed off and it would soon be time to roll out of the climb.
Pilots in a dogfight would have to carefully manage speed and energy when fighting in the vertical regime.
Modern aircraft like the F-15 Eagle can accelerate straight up until the engines run out of air at about 65,000 feet.
