The Phantom Joker Escape - Ep. 02, Path A: The Spooky Forest in the Ancient World
Note: The Phantom Joker Escape has since closed. This room is no longer around.
Date: 12th October 2014 Players: Apple, BHox, Jels, jonger, Slow, xtanha1rrmx
We headed back to Phantom Joker for a second room, rather quickly by our usual standard but mainly due to upcoming plans, rooms and events. This room put a sort of reality check on our rather sky-high expectations after Mysterious Lab. I think we all agreed after the game that Mysterious Lab was a notch better.
Nonetheless, Spooky Forest isn't bad, but ends up being quite search-y. It reminds me a little bit of Ghastly Melodies in a sense. Comparatively, though, there are far more puzzles in this room than in GM, but none that are difficult enough to take very long to complete.
The best part of this room was probably the fear factor. It was meant as conditioning for what will be, hopefully, more scary (or not) than the rooms we've been to, and it definitely was some conditioning. The scaredy-cat in our team yesterday was well and truly frightened (although mainly due to our own doing). The rest of us did better (but not by that much).
I must also commend what I think was rather creative use of UV lighting, in which we bathed for a majority of the game. It was a major factor in most of the puzzles, and was well integrated with the storyline (which, unfortunately, was itself slightly questionable). Aside from the UV though, nothing much that we hadn't seen before, and nothing quite as impressive as Mysterious Lab.
Don't let that put you off, though. The room is pretty alright. One other thing I think you might find quite interesting was that we started in utter darkness. The room was an okay size for six, which is what Phantom Joker recommends as the maximum. Being a search-y room, more players is always better, so six is good.
Stay tuned for more!

The Phantom Joker Escape - Ep. 01 Mysterious Lab Lost in Time
Note: The Phantom Joker Escape has since closed. This room is no longer around.
Date: 27th September 2014 Players: Apple, BHox, Jels, jonger, Slow, xtanha1rrmx
This week we finally got around to visiting one of the companies we've had on our radar for a long time: Phantom Joker. Located at the corner of Neil Road and Cantonment Road, it's easily accessible from Outram Park MRT. We'd read and heard good things about it before, so we went in expecting much. This room didn't disappoint.
I had a good feeling about the place the moment I stepped in - a hallway lined with hall-of-fame polaroids leading to a lounge area. It was well-lit and spacious, and a dart board provided good entertainment while waiting for the room to be set up. The place looked well-maintained, in contrast with some of the other companies which are set up in old buildings.
The staff was friendly, and gave us a good overview of the storyline that runs through all 5 of their rooms - Prequel, Ep 1, Ep 2a&b, and Sequel. This gives some context to the final bit of this room, which ends fairly abruptly; after all this is just one segment of the larger story.
The visual and technological elements in this room are top notch - by far the best we've seen in any room so far. Without giving away too much, we can say that lasers are awesome; the picture on Phantom Joker's website doesn't do justice at all to the room. These lasers are not just decorative (although some of our group wasted minutes just staring and admiring them), but also are well-integrated into the puzzles and storyline.
The puzzles are a little more hands-on compared to other rooms, and you won't find many of the usual 4-digit or master locks. There is a large emphasis on physical effects, so think creatively and play around (literally) with the items in the room - the puzzles themselves are not that hard. A word of warning - there is one segment that requires some physicality, so this room may not be suitable for those who are physically handicapped.
Overall, we think this room is pretty up there - one of the best rooms we've encountered (haha), even though we got out before the 45 minute mark. We're definitely going back to finish the whole storyline, so look out for future posts!
