Attended my first musical yesterday. It was surreal. I was looking forward to see the principal Phantom and Christine, but I realized later on yesterday's matinee had understudies at the helm. I know nothing about theatre, but they were good. I wonder what I'll watch next?

#PhantomManila thoughts

I’m still incredibly happy that the first musical I saw live was the first musical I fell in love with.

•  I was a bit disappointed when I realized Jonathan Roxmouth and Meghan Picerno wouldn’t be performing as the Phantom and Christine.

•  But Clara Verdier was FANTASTIC. I LOVE HER.

•  She and Matt Leisy (Raoul) have strong chemistry. Surprisingly, the performance made me love Raoul more than the Phantom - for the first time ever! My mom also jumped on the #TeamRaoul train because of their All I Ask of You duet. 

•  Ian Jon Bourg was okay as the Phantom. He was good, but his voice and actions lack the smoothness I was used to. I got confused when he didn’t lift Christine to put her on the boat when she fainted? One thing though, this is the one time the Phantom actually felt creepy - which is quite remarkable.

•  The part when Monsieur Lefevre retired and he mentioned Boracay? PRICELESS. That dialogue caught me off-guard that I couldn’t stop laughing for about 10 seconds.

•  Even though I saw hundreds of clips and the 25th anniversary recording, the experience was still amazing. I’ll never stop having goosebumps whenever the overture plays over the rising of the chandelier.

•  Sidenote: THEY RUN OUT OF THE PHANTOM BEARS IN THE MERCH STORE WTF!

[I think I made my mom into a musical theatre fan. She now wants to join me whenever there’ll be a tour in Manila.]

The title, borrowed from from Lloyd Webber’s seminal rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, is how one is bound to feel after a whole night immersed in his countless works. Love him or hate him, Baron Lloyd-Webber’s contributions to the musical theatre canon are innumerable and unforgettable. His catalogue is rich with hits, from new classics (School of Rock, Love Never Dies) to classic classics (The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Cats) — surely, more than enough to sustain an evening’s worth of singing and geeking out! Get ready to feel “As If We Never Said Goodbye.” Sixteen Bars’ Broadway Open Mic is back for its fourth year, and have we got quite a season ready for you! (And don’t forget to hit the Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial Pool on your way out — just make sure you’re not suddenly replaced by Glenn Close!) SUPERSTAR: Broadway Open Mic will be held on February 16, 2019, at Staple and Perk Café in Ecoplaza Building (2305 Chino Roces Ave., Makati City). Registration opens at 6:00 PM. The event runs from 07:00 PM to 12:00 MN. Entrance fee (including one free drink) is PhP 250, inclusive of one performance slot. Performance slots are given on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will only be reserved upon registration at the venue. That would be correct :) He is the alternate/understudy Phantom here in Manila and I believe that he played the role last Aug. 29 if I'm not mistaken and yeah, last Friday Sept. 21 :)
