Phantom Restaged: Key Changes of Act One
So as I put together my production design for Phantom Restaged I'm coming up with a lot of little things that are different, and I figured I'd list them here for all those interested - only Act One is finalized thus far:
Lefevre's reference to Meg during the Hannibal ballet is now to La Sorelli, who takes Meg's place as prima ballerina. Meg is now the leader of a row as she is in the novel, and she keeps her "Christine? What's the matter?" line.
Christine is definitively blonde. Meg, by extension, is much closer to her book appearance - dark-skinned and dark-haired. Madame Giry resembles her daughter.
Philippe is now the patron, not Raoul (the new lines are "Will the Comte be at the performance this evening, monsieur?" "In our box, with his brother the Vicomte, Raoul.")
After Raoul's "Brava! Brava!" Philippe tries to get him to sit down, prompting "Long ago..."
La Sorelli is not included with the gushing ballet girls after "Think of Me"; Mme. Giry mentions that "other than Sorelli, you were a disgrace tonight!"
Philippe accompanies Raoul and the managers to Christine's door; Raoul's line is "Gentlemen - Philippe - if you don't mind, this is one visit I'd prefer to make unaccompanied." Philippe leaves with the others and is never seen again in the show.
During "I Remember/Stranger...", rather than a Mandarin robe the Phantom wears a Persian robe and an astrakhan cap. This is intended to reference the Daroga, as I couldn't work him into the show proper.
In Prima Donna, the managers now sing "A chorus girl who's gone and slept with a patron" to keep Philippe in the picture but preserve the rhyme.
Raoul's line is now "Gentleman, if you would care to take your seats? I shall be sitting in Box Five alone, as my brother has gone to Calais on holiday."
La Sorelli returns as prima ballerina, and it is her scream that is loudest when Buquet's body appears hanging from a rope. She dashes offstage in a panic.
The chandelier crashes directly into the stage, cracking it in a bit of stage magic.
That's all for now, stay tuned for act II!
