Comparison of Danny Phantom and Chronicles of Avelisor
@tkiesai asked for a ramble about Chronicles of Avelisor by Sara A. Noe and the similarities it has between Danny Phantom! So I am here to deliver that request!!
MAJOR Chronicles of Avelisor (COA) spoilers for books 1 (A Fallen Hero) and book 2 (Phantom's Mask) ahead! Spoiler free info will be below and spoiler info will be below the cut (unfortunately where most of the similarities lie) so please proceed with caution. If you are here to see the similaries and have no interest in reading the series first, then proceed. IF you want to read the series, DO NOT read below the cut, this series is best experienced without knowing anything and being surprised.
Quick overview/review of Chronicles of Avelisor: This series is written by a self published indie author. A Fallen Hero is 454 pages and Phantom's Mask is 579 pages. I have not gotten my hands on book 3, Blood of the Enemy yet and I believe book 4 is either just released or is releasing soon... The worldbuilding is some of the greatest I've ever seen... I can't stress enough how breathtaking this world Sara A. Noe has built.
These are the genre's of the book according to Goodreads.
AND YEAH. Sara has managed to combine all of these genre's into one book. Its great. I would also like to add FOUND FAMILY!!! This story has a really strong found family vibe! Another thing I love about this story is about how clean it is in terms of spice. There is no romance , minimal swearing, but it does have a lot of violence, medical horror, gore, human experimentation, dehumanization, memory loss... yeah all the good stuff the Danny Phantom fandom is used too!
Here is the official synopsis of book 1, A Fallen Hero according to good reads and the back of the book lol.
Cato is the only true half-human, half-ghost hybrid in existence. He's powerful and unique with two divine powers instead of one. The United States government believes he is the key to developing a devastating weapon that will give humankind an advantage when war inevitably erupts between the Human Realm and Avilésor, the Ghost Realm. After being an unwilling test subject in Project Alpha for two years, Cato and the rest of his "lab-family" survive a transport accident to find themselves stranded and powerless in the middle of the wilderness. Hunted every step of the way by ghostly Shadow Guards with supernatural abilities and human Agents desperate to recapture their prisoners, the eight young fugitives are drawn to Cato's hometown where the Rip between Realms connects the worlds. Cato wants nothing to do with his past, but as his enemies close in, he realizes he's willing to do anything to protect his lab-family . . . . . . even kidnap the daughter of a ghost hunter and make a dangerous deal to become a mercenary.
SOUND A BIT FAMILIAR??? YEAH I THOUGHT SO TOO! I immediately made the connection with DP, and read a sample of the book and was HOOKED.
One last thing before we get to the comparisons. I have not written this with any intention claiming that Sara copied DP. I do not believe this is true. Nowhere can you find any claims that they are related or material is related. Do I think its a mere coincidence? Not really... I have a feeling this author might've watched DP as a child, that's for sure but there are a vast amount of differences that Chronicles of Avelisor is 100% it's own world and story. I am a mere person noting the similarities and getting WAY too excited about it.
And now for my spoiler free comparison:
Danny and Cato are both half-human, half-ghost
Danny and Cato were both half ghost superhero's in their town and both went by the alias of Phantom (Cato named himself after his flipping TOWN of Phantom heights, idk why XD) (*Note, Cato is no longer Phantom, he is now an escaped test subject of Project Alpha and travels with his lab-family)
Both have a ghost hunting organization, Guys in White for DP and AGC for COA (The AGC is way scarier then the GIW ever was. The AGC is like what the DP fandom writes the GIW as -- an actually powerful government organization that experiments on ghosts)
There is ectoplasm and ectoguns in both series (I can't quite remember how ectoplasm works in COA tho, I know it might be a bit different tho but it isn't touched upon much)
While re-reading/scanning the books while writing this, I came across a side character named Danny who is on the Phantom Height's ghost raid team. (WAS- oops it says he's deceased HAH) Not a big comparison but enough for me to giggle at.
I forgot about Wes oh my gosh. Wes is a werewolf :D and a millionaire
And below the cut is my heavy spoiler, fully in-depth analysis and comparison! I hit the most important parts!
