Phase Five
The Marvel Cinematic Universe closes out Phase Five by introducing a new team of heroes: the Thunderbolts. The ensemble cast includes some familiar MCU faces, like Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell; it also introduces some new characters, including Lewis Pullman, whose character, Bob, has a pair of powerful alter egos, Sentry and Void. Pullman spoke about his character's introduction into the Thunderboltsand the MCU, and he says that, well, it's a bit awkward.
Thunderbolts* opens in theaters on May 2.
The latest, and likely most horrifying addition to my possibly neverending Gorillaz collection... a variety of defective SuperPlastic Tranz 2-D pieces! These aren't "prototypes", exactly, but instead takes on the figure that were rejected for one reason or another. Unfortunately, no full figure out of the set, but I'm really psyched to have this striking array of mutilated Stuart remains.
I've just received these guys all the way from China, and I'm planning to make a full-on video giving them a more thorough look; - but, off the bat, it's an interesting glimpse into these figures' production. Each piece seems to have its issue, or otherwise imperfect area; whether it be misshapen pegs/sockets, general warping, stray vinyl, etc. Funny to me that the eyes and hair were inserted at this point in manufacturing, but not the teeth. Love that cute "ghastly screaming pain" look!
The figures are absolutely caked in dirt; literally getting my hands dirty just opening them. With SuperPlastic having just announced their closure, I wouldn't be surprised if these were found strewn aside some odd factory closing up shop - looks like 2-D's rotten corpse(s). I'm planning to clean 'em up, and display them in some kind of shadowbox frame; they're pretty dang one-of-a-kind, and definitely a new holy grail for my happy landfill of Gorillazish garbage.
Now, for something a bit different!
I was lucky enough to receive a few early The Now Now mixes / "demos" from Doctor Wurzel, who you can find over on Twitter. I've uploaded them to my YouTube and Internet Archive accounts, but very few fans have noticed 'em, and I really think they're pretty cool. First up, we've got One Percent. The differences here are pretty much entirely in the mix - loads of unique little sounds that are buried or muddied in the final version are here front and center, sounding a lot more "full" and spacey. Reminds me a lot of how the track was performed live, very atmospheric.
And second, we've got an early version of Souk Eye; this one's much more interesting, with lots of unused ideas and instruments that really add to the whole song. Again, this isn't so much a "demo" as it as some odd early mix, but the differences present are so awesome. I definitely prefer this version to the final - it's so groovy!
Hopefully more will be coming soon; the entire early album mix has been floating around quietly online for quite a while - Humility and Tranz are pretty interesting - so, it's only a matter of time.
