Looking into frequency modulation and using it for sound design, I have come across a really weird phenomenon with phase plant. Not in the synth itself, but with tutorials and presets. Whenever I have looked for anything that uses FM in Phaseplant, it doesn't use FM, it uses Phase Modulation. A lot of "FM in Phase Plant" tutorials will open by saying "We're actually using Phase Modulation, but it's basically the same," and a lot of "FM" presets are actually using PM. Now, they are very similar. In fact, the theory behind both is pretty much identical, it's just the actual maths that's different, but they don't sound the same and Phase Plant can do both, so this seeming agreement to call PM "FM" makes no sense to me. Like, Sytrus is an FM synth, and you can make sounds similar to Sytrus in Phase Plant, but not if you do it the way the vast majority of resources tell you to do FM. (for the curious, most tutorials will tell you to plug the output of an oscillator into the "phase" parameter of another oscillator. To get actual FM, plug it into the "shift" parameter instead.)
