Sister Mary Kenneth Keller, first woman to earn a doctorate in Computer Science in the United States, 1965.

*First person, in history! Keller’s title as the the very first person to earn a PhD in CS has been largely ignored and reduced to “the first woman” because Irving C Tang also earned a CS doctorate the same day, however he earned a DSc (doctorate of science) while Keller earned a PhD (doctorate of philosophy). There is great confusion outside of academia about these two titles, both are doctorates but require different contributions to the field. Also, while they both graduated the same day, Keller graduated in the morning and Irving graduated after her. So no matter which way you look at it, Keller graduated with THE FIRST EVER doctorate of Computer Science (as well as the first PhD of CS). Let’s give genius women the titles they earned.
