How did Salt and Fire met?
Forgive the sketchiness, my back is hurting like hell this week lol
When they first met, Fire Eyes was only after Salt's fish.
Thank you for sending me lots of asks!
Katie who's your favorite person?
Bored so here's some naming lore. I hate naming things so I'm just going to do what I want to get through it lol.
Pheny taught Salt land language and how to cook with fire. She explains to Salt that salt ( the food ingredient) comes from the ocean but has had all the water dried out of it. Salt decides that would be a good name for him as he too came from the ocean and has dried out. (Pheny thinks it's a silly name but is used to his odd way of thinking and too tired to argue).
Pheny's name is Phoenix, but Salt has hearing problems because his ears are built for underwater. So that's as close as he got and this story is from Salts POV.
Salts first name translates kind of to "Small meek hermit crab who lives in the purple spiral shell". Names focus on the fish's soul shell, since that's what is the true being. The body is just a modifier/extension of the shell. So one body might be bold, and then the next time the shell has a body, it might be shy. So he could also be called "Purple Spiral Shell". But any of his past lives would share that name too. When he left the ocean and his shell behind, he decided to change his name too. Since he didn't have his shell anymore and it felt wrong to identify as something he wasn't anymore .
Thinking about calling the land language Tontong. Shortened from Town Tongue, which is what the townsmen ( humans) speak. It's kind of a universal language unless you're in a remote area. Probably not super realistic but I don't want to write a story that has a million languages.
Fire Eyes was named so because Salt didn't know the word for orange and they didn't speak the same language at first so that's just what Salt was calling him in his head. Fire loves the name because he thinks he has beautiful eyes and it's flattering. Birds change names often, usually at their life stages. Ex: 3rd born chick > Runny Nose > Willow Bending in Wind > Father Whispering Willow Wind > Grandfather Willow Wood Tea.
Fire's name before he met Salt was "Eagle Who Chases Squirrels". It's kind of a teasing name, based on a parable of a mighty eagle that is exhausting from chasing tiny squirrels around that wouldn't be worth the effort to chase. Fire always got into trouble over small squabbles and thought of him self as a mighty hunter in the making when he was younger, so his people named him that to kind of make fun of him. It always pissed him off and led to him pulling out the tail feathers of the other boys. When Salt told him that he had been calling him Fire Eyes, he loved it and took it up. Plus there was no way Salt could pronounce his Bird name.
