Therapeutic Class: Anticonvulsants
Pharmacologic Class: Phenyltriazines
Indicated Uses: Simple/Complex (partial) seizures, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (generalized)
Adverse Effects: Minor CNS and GI symptoms; SJS
Black Box Warning: Serious rashes have been reported including SJS. Stopping treatment may not prevent rash from becoming life threatening. Extended-release form not recommended for ages under 13 years old.
Pregnancy Considerations: No adequate studies in pregnant women. Breastfeeding isn’t recommended. Infants (first trimester) have greater risk of developing cleft lip.
Nursing Considerations: Available for oral use only.
Drug Interactions: Other antiepileptic drugs, CNS depressants, oral contraceptives
Patient Teaching: Drug may cause rash; do not engage in hazardous activities until familiar with drug; May trigger sensitivity to sun; Do not stop abruptly
