Philippines - A Denied Mother

The story tells a tale about a magical dog who had three human daughters. When two of the daughters rejected their mother due to their shame over their unconventional origins, one of them stepped up and chose to care for her unconditionally. This week's fable unveils a tale of familial bonds and reminds us of the need to acknowledge where we came from.

The Pugot is a humanoid creature found in Philippine mythology. The Pugot is described as a massive humanoid creature that is black in color and has no head. The Pugot is known to be a shapeshifter and can change into forms of animals and people and it lives in dark places, abandoned houses, and trees. Despite its appearance, the Pugot is a harmless creature that eats snakes and insects by forcing them through its stump head. The Pugot has also been known to be fond of women's underwear and steals them off of clotheslines at night and its name translates to “Decapitated One.”

Awhile ago my coworker asked me to draw a Manananggal. I had never heard of a Manananggal before so this is what I drew based on his description. It’s a pretty scary beast.

The Marcupo is a giant snake found in the Philippines. The Marcupo is described as a giant snake said to be 45 feet long with a large red crest on its head, large tusks and fangs, a forked tail, and a tongue covered in thorns. The Marcupo is said to spit venom has been known to be heard singing on quiet days.

The Segben is a dog-like creature found in the Philippines. The Segben is described as a dog-like creature with dog-like head, a monkey-like body, sharp teeth, a long tongue, and long bat-like ears. The Segben is said to run very fast both backwards which leaves people unable to tell which end is the head and which end is the tail. The Segben is said to lick a person and as soon as it's tongue touches a person they immediately die then the Segben proceeds to devour them. People know when a Segben is coming by hearing the sound of its ears flapping as it is runs. To ward off a Segben people have been known to carry herbs and knives for protection.

The Sarangay is described as a bull-like creature found in the Philippines. The Sarangay is described as a half-bull and half-man creature resembling the Minotaur that when angry, breathes smoke out of it's nose. The Sarangay has a gemstone in one of its ears and if anyone tries to steal the stone gets brutally killed by the Sarangay.
