Philip Straub: Fantasy Artist Extraordinaire
Straub is a very prominent artist in the industry, as he’s worked for dozens of big-name companies in the past and today, like Nickelodeon, Scholastic, Mattel, EA, and plenty more. He also judges digital art competitions and is the founder of CGSociety; an online digital art community.
I was watching GameGrumps one day, and Danny mentioned that he has a lot of fantasy art prints on his walls in his house by Philip Straub. I’m so glad I googled his name, because he’s one of the best artists I’ve seen.
I would describe his art style as emotional, color and detail-oriented, and atmospheric. He’s able to create such breath taking scenes where you find yourself hunting down and relishing every little detail that he’s so perfectly incorporated into each one of his pieces. There’s a waterfall here and there, a lion, a crowded shipyard, and it all adds so much value and sometimes realism to the picture that you can’t take all of it in at once and leaves you speechless. I’m having a hard enough time describing them myself! Another thing that is worthy of celebration is the variety in his art. He’s not just a fantasy artist, as the title of the post may imply, he’s done plenty of other works with cyberpunk/steampunk inspiration, futuristic and real-world themed pieces, dystopian and eutopian landscapes/still shots, portraits, as well as somewhat abstract pieces. He has the ability to take seemingly any theme of art and display the theme perfectly but still with his own charm to it. I must say, few are they that posses this mans level of artistic talent. I particularly enjoy his “natural” landscape works, like “The Great North Road”, “Silent Morning”, “Afternoon Light”, and “Winter”. But I also really like “Infinite Oz” because of its general landscape and setting, “In Motion” because it’s an imitation of a really cool photography technique (long exposure) and I am an active member of that community of artists, “Pendelhaven” because I adore huge trees in fantasy forests (Great Deku Tree?), and plenty others that would make this list just too long. I could spend minutes looking at each and every one of his works and wouldn’t get bored of a single one. It’s the kind of art you can sit down and get lost in for a while.
