In Beijing, we held a workshop at CAFA on our show, Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World. All the players of the historic China/Avant Garde show joined us for two days of great discussions, including Fan Di'an and Gao Minglu. On Day Two, the brilliant Wang Hui gave a keynote and commended our periodization - 1989 to 2008. Everyone is coming to the October 4 opening, which happens to land on the Autumn Festival.
UCCA's retrospective of David Diao is the best show in town. Here is a lifetime of an artist's work that has too long gone unnoticed, suspended between perceptions of his being an American conceptualist painter and being a not-quite-Chinese-enough artist to make the global cut. Who cares! Here is a body of work that is smart, critical and surprisingly gorgeous. This painting tabs Barnett Newman's annual output of work on a canvas whose color and proportion appropriates the iconic subject matter's. I remember David from our 1980s SoHo days.
