On August 1, 2024, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson declared August as Ukrainian Month. A flag raising ceremony took place along with the singing of the American and Ukrainian national anthem among other festivities.
The city has a history of recognizing Ukrainian heritage in August as well as showing support for the existence of an independent Ukraine. In 1933, the Chicago City Hall declared Ukrainian week from August 14th to the 20th, and Ukrainian Day as August 19th.
