Wednesday, January 11: Kylesa, “Inward Debate”
“Inward Debate” didn’t sound like one, as it was a two and a half-minute blast of cavernous drumming and bowel-loosening riffage. So in that respect, the tune fit right in Kylesa’s wheelhouse: Exhausting Fire’s second track was perfectly of a piece with the band’s overall discography even as it expanded their boundaries with subtle atmospheric touches. Laura Pleasants didn’t sing so much as bellow over the cave of sound she, Phillip Cope and Carl McGinley carved out of their din, and the whole thing played like a trip through a wind tunnel. But even despite the sudden glut of stoner/doom/sludge metal outfits on the scene, Kylesa owned their sound fully, and “Inward Debate” plowed through everything in its path with a sensibility that was entirely unique to this band.
