Promises, Promises
Phillip Kopus x fem!OC
{6 Years Ago}
Zoe's POV:
This is it: The last time I'll ever get to see him. Phillip & I are in my house, silently listening as the record plays, swaying as he holds me in his arms from behind.
Phillip: "You know what's coming."
Me: *nods* "I know. I just wish it could wait another day."
Phillip: "Or another year."
I gently smile as we continue the list of hypothetical postponements.
Me: "Another century."
Phillip: "Another lifetime."
Me: *chuckles* "If only."
There's a moment of silence, excluding the music, before either of us says anything.
Me: "Can I come visit you?"
Phillip: "You don't want that, sweetheart."
Me: "I want you."
I place a hand over his as they're interlocked around my waist.
Me: "I need you, to see you, even if it's in that hellhole."
Phillip briefly releases me, confusing me for a second, before he turns me around to face him.
Phillip: "It's better if you only see me like this, that you remember me like this, the way I am with you right now."
I try to hold back tears, wishing that this wasn't the end, yet still waiting for the inevitable to happen.
Me: "Better for me or you?"
I reach up to gently hold his face in my hands, and he leans into my touch before kissing my palm.
Phillip: "Better for us."
At this point, I have to bite my lip to keep up the brave face that I need, that we both need to get through this.
Me: "So, can I visit?"
Phillip: "I won't stop you if you do, but I wouldn't blame you if you didn't."
Me: *shakes her head* "Try and stop me."
Phillip smiles as he closes his eyes and presses his forehead against mine.
Phillip: *chuckles* "That's my girl."
I close my eyes, savoring this moment until I hear vehicles pull into the driveway. Phillip must hear them too, seeing as he glances behind him before pulling me into a long, passionate, longing kiss before cupping my face in his hands.
Phillip: "You know I love you."
Me: "I know. I love you, too."
Phillip kisses me one last time, then he kisses my forehead, before walking away, stopping at the door as he slightly turns his head.
Phillip: "Wait for me?"
Me: *nods* "Always."
Phillip silently nods before walking out the door with his hands raised in surrender. The door closes behind him as two officers roughly turn him around to handcuff him, allowing me one last glance into his eyes, before the door closes and I let myself break down.
{Present Time}
Things have been tense among the community ever since a boy from NYU disappeared near the Lenape tribe settlement, and because they don't get along with the other townspeople, the tribe has kept quiet about it, but the police are still on the lookout for leads.
As for me, things have been pretty neutral: Mike & I still talk and occasionally hang out, though he's been a little preoccupied since he and his girlfriend are expecting. After Phillip's arrest, my parents urged me to move on, never letting up even when I repeatedly told them I wasn't interested in anyone else. Eventually, I ran away, so Marie let me stay with her, but things got a little crowded with Junior, Mike, and Mike's girlfriend also living there, and it's only gonna get more crowded with a newborn on the way, so I eventually moved out and into an old house Phillip & I use to hide out in whenever we wanted to escape. Even before I moved out, I started work at the local diner and paid Marie rent with half my salary, including tips, but she rarely accepted it, so I still have enough to get by.
The tribe's having a ceremony out in the woods, but I was never an official member, and I only ever went if Phillip brought me along, so I'm working at the diner.
Waitress: "Another day..."
Me: "Another half-assed tip."
Waitress: *chuckles* "So why don't you quit? It's never too late to get an education."
Me: "Yeah, but then I'd probably never come back, and I promised someone I'd stick around, at least for a while."
Waitress: "Well, that someone isn't here, and what he doesn't know won't hurt him."
Even if I don't mention him by name, people generally assume my 'someone' is Phillip, seeing as most of the locals have been here since I was a kid, and long before that, and are familiar with my history with him.
Waitress: "Besides, who knows if he's ever getting out? With all the fights he got into when we were young, I'd be surprised if he didn't add a couple years to his sentence."
The dishes I'm cleaning up lightly shake as my grip wavers at the thought. But I know Phillip, and as bad as everyone says he is, he'd never do that to me, at least not on purpose. I love him, but he doesn't always think things through when someone or something pisses him off.
Me: "He'll be back. A promise is a promise."
Waitress: "Yeah, but from what I've heard, only one of you made a promise, and it wasn't him."
I glance at my coworker, who shrugs to say, 'I'm just saying', and although I know she's trying to help in her way, she's doing the exact opposite. I resume working, moving the dishes to the sink in the back, and on my way out towards the main room, I see a truck pull into the driveway, a familiarly tattooed arm hanging out the driver's window bringing a smile to my face.
Me: "Hey, would you mind covering the rest of my shift?"
Waitress: "Sure, but why all of a sudden? Last-minute road trip?"
Me: "Let's just say, I'm going to Philly."
Without sticking around to see or hear her reaction, I walk out of the restaurant, stepping aside as more customers walk in, and stopping to confirm my suspicions. The truck door opens and out steps...Phillip Kopus. My grin widens as I rush to approach him. He sees me at the last minute, smiling and opening his arms as I leap into them, hugging him tightly as I silently cry tears of joy, his hand wrapped tightly around my waist as his other hand caresses the back of my head. He's finally here, back with me, safe and sound. He came back, just like I knew he would.
Me: "I missed you."
Phillip: *sighs* "Not as much as I missed you, darlin'."
Me: "I wanted to visit. I tried, hell, I even wrote, but--"
Phillip: "I know, I know. Parents are a pain in the ass."
Me: *laughs* "I'll say."
I pull back to look into his eyes, to look at his newly-bearded face.
Me: "I waited for you. As promised."
Phillip: "Never doubted you, baby. Not for one second."
Me: "You look good. The beard's nice."
I gently reach out, hesitating in case he's not up for physical contact yet, but he gently grabs my wrist and pulls it toward his face, leaning into my touch and kissing my palm as he did that day.
Phillip: "Glad you like it. You look beautiful as ever, as always.-*looks me over*-Though, the waitress thing is new."
Me: *chuckles* "Well, I had to keep myself busy somehow. Life's no fun without you around."
Phillip: "So, Zoe Cook works at a diner.-*chuckles*-You were bored out of your mind, weren't you?"
Me: "Yeah, but you're here now."
Phillip smiles, as he pulls me into the kiss I've waited 6 years for, the one that tells me he's really here and this isn't a dream. We pull away after a few kisses and lean our foreheads against one another's.
Phillip: *whispers* "I love you, Zozo."
Me: "I love you more, Philly."
Phillip: "Let's go home. Your place or mine?"
Me: "It's the same place."
Phillip: "Our place?"
Me: "Yeah. I told you I missed you."
Phillip grins as he kisses me again before pulling me into another hug and leading me to the passenger's side of the truck, climbing into the driver's seat and holding my hand the whole way as we drive to our home, together again at last.
