Before you condemn riots/looting, remember:

A reality of segregation in America is that impoverished Black and brown neighborhoods don’t have commercial stores in the same number as white neighborhoods, and never without extra security. Small businesses can be easier targets (sometimes the only ones) to satisfy what is often immediate and desperate material need (food, hygiene products, medication, money, etc)

Community organizers would never target nor condone looting small businesses, unless the business owner is known to collaborate with police/harm the community in another violent way.

Community organizers build together funds to restore wrongfully looted businesses, often within hours.

The media hyperfixates on these stories to demonize all looting, ignoring 1, 2 & 3 to cause disfavorable views of legitimate rioters: it is propaganda of the ruling class.

Small business owners who are aware of the oppression they suffer would condone looting large businesses. Those who don’t are class traitors. Many do ally with protesters and looters.

You have no legitimacy to say how another community should act. Communities know themselves better than you ever will as an outsider. It is never your place to tell hungry people how they should eat. These communities have skilled leadership and organizers, what they lack is access to resources and the freedom to exist without being targeted by police for existing.

Day 21: Philly Riots

In front of Philadelphia’s Independence HalI in 1965 people came together for the first time in pride demonstrations to advocate for lesbian and gay rights. Organizers of the Reminder marches chose Philadelphia for the Liberty Bell’s symbolism, its strategic use in the Civil Rights movement, and the goal of the demonstration: to advocate for freedom and equality. The Reminder marches fostered empowerment, shaped pride demonstrations, and inspired many to advocate for lesbian and gay rights in the public and private sphere. At first, many were fearful to advocate publicly due to the criminalization of their gender identities and sexualities, but in participating they found their voice. The last Reminder march took place shortly after the Stonewall Riots.

When I talked to my mother about current events she often watches the news and shakes her head. She said to me she doesn't understand why what Trump said is so upsetting for people. I felt the urge to fight her but then she said this to me:

"I am not upset by President Trumps words. Since we came to this country we have only been met with the Donald Trumps the nasty CEOS and these police. And yeah, we got kicked around a lot. Every day off the school bus we get the crap kicked out of us. Dego, wop, white nigger, go back home. Every. Day. This is all the United States has been to me and it is all I ever know it as. I'm not surprised. So what do you people want?"

It hit me hard. And I felt and deeply understood why I felt out of place as visibly white when for so long the U. S has marked us as non visibly black. Since I was younger I denied this country. In fifth grade I began refusing to stand for the pledge of allegiance. In 7th grade I told anyone who would listen the deciet, horror, and rotting core that is the country of the United States. No one would listen. They laughed at me. Gave me detention. Mocked me. And I felt like I was spinning my wheels.

Well. I wish I could tell that me not to give up. To stick with UN Club. To write more essays. So be louder.

That's why I'm so vocal now.

there is a quote in one of my favorite movies that i love. it was from “two can play that game” and auntie viv said it. it was something along the lines of:

“why are you in your own house tearin’ up your own shit? you should be at his house tearin’ up his shit. afterwards, you can leave and go home.”

that’s how i feel about what was going down in philly last night. i know ya’ll won the superbowl, but did you have to destroy your own shit? a foxholer sent me a video that disturbed me to the core. some hyena was out there legit eating horse shit. yes. a whole horse dump buffet in those forests. this is what i was sent…
