October 27: Thriller
Happy Birthday, Jose Ferrer (January 8, 1912 – January 26, 1992)
He picked up his Academy Award for Cyrano de Bergerac, and he won a Tony in 1947 for the same role on Broadway. With his 1950 Best Actor win, Ferrer became the first Hispanic actor to win an Academy Award. Personally, my favorite of Jose Ferrer’s many screen appearances is his performance as defense attorney Barney Greenwald in The Caine Mutiny, where he defends the men accused of challenging Humphrey Bogart’s Captain Queeg.
Before his success as Cyrano, Ferrer starred as sophisticated sleuth Philo Vance on radio. He made only one appearance on Suspense - an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum.” In honor of his birthday, here is Jose Ferrer in “a tale well calculated to keep you in Suspense!” Plus we’ll hear one of his radio mysteries as Philo Vance.
