When Hyun-ju and Yong-sik voted to continue the games, I was so mad because they knew fully well it could’ve costed them the lives of their friends and loved ones as well. But then I realized that was the whole point. Everyone in the games is selfish because the games brings out the worst in people. Even Gi-Hun, the man who couldn’t even hurt a fly, ended up killing a man with his bare hands.
And yet, we love these characters, their flaws and all. Gi-hun kind of represents the audience, choosing to love others, flaws and all (For Gi-hun it’s a general love for humanity and the value of life).
So when he says “humans are…”, I feel like neither he knows what he was going to say. He has seen humans being selfish, but also being kind. They kill one another and they protect one another. They love and they hate. Humans are complex. But regardless of what they are, their lives are valuable, not because they’re perfect, but because they mean so much to us.
If there was anything Gi-Hun taught me, it’s that you matter, and so do I.
