“Please don’t be mad at me….I’m sorry.”
Word Count: 2665
It’s not often when it happens, but Charles can lose his temper, just like any normal human being. It takes a lot to push him to that edge - be it in his personal life, or his professional life. On one particular bad day, he had made his secretary cry due to not being able to control his anger. It wasn’t his finest moment, and he had apologized profusely - through words and a few nominal gifts, which she had gladly accepted. He never lost his temper with her following that outburst, and when he could feel himself getting close to that point, he would take a quick walk outside, and then approach talking to her from a different headspace. He would do that right now, but it would look a lot worse than it is, because even though he’s seeing red at the moment, he does his best to take into account of others around him.
“Charles?” He keeps himself relatively calm, as his young lover tries to appease him. “Charles, did I make you upset?” Finnian asks, his voice meek and timid. “Charles, please-”
“Enough.” He can hear the anger that’s been building inside of him since the beginning of their ‘discussion’. “Don’t say anything else right now, Finny.” He looks at his lover, who is on the verge of tears, which only seems to make him more upset.
“But, I didn’t mean anything bad about-”
“I said enough!” His booming voice echoes in the silence of their living room. Rather than apologize, he goes over to the coatrack, and grabs his jacket. “I’ll be back later.” He walks out of the apartment, the door slamming shut behind him. He hears a frustrated cry from behind the door, which causes a sharp pain in his chest. Lowering his head, he walks to the elevator, trying to block out the noise of the pain he’s just caused his lover.
Shoving his hands into his coat pockets, he walks along the sidewalk, as he replays their conversation in his head, trying to figure out just why it had escalated to that point.
”Oh! You’re home!” Finnian says, as he walks into their apartment, Charles coming out of the kitchen to greet his lover. “I thought you were working late at the office this evening.”
“My client canceled on me.” Walking over to his lover, he pulls him into his arms. “Are you disappointed I’m here?” He teases him, tapping his finger on the tip of his nose. “I’m not interrupting your plans, am I?”
“No!” Laughter bubbles out of Finnian’s throat, as he returns the hug. “I just didn’t expect anyone to be home.”
He looks into his lover’s eyes, and sees something there that he’s not used to seeing. “Finnian? What’s going on?”
“W-What?” Finnian sets his backpack down, and looks at him. “What do you mean? Nothing’s wrong, Charles.”
“I can see it in your eyes. Now, what’s going on?” He asks, allowing his lover to have some space. “Are you really that bothered that I’m home right now?”
“Not at all! No, I just…”
Uneasiness begins to wash over him, as he looks Finnian. “Whatever it is, it can’t be that bad. Just have out with it.”
“You’re going to get mad at me, Charles. I don’t want to make you upset.” There’s real fear in his lover’s voice, which makes him wonder just what could be so bad that he would react this way towards him.
Taking a deep breath, he tries to brush away the anxiety that keeps crawling up his spine, and offers a smile to Finnian. “I won’t.”
“But you will!” Finnian shakes his head, holding his backpack in his arms. “I don’t want you to get mad at me.”
“When have I ever been upset with you?” He couldn’t remember if there had ever been a time where the two of them had gotten into an argument. He honestly could not recall ever having had a spat with Finnian; before when it had just been the two of them, and not since Ronald had joined their family.
“Y-You haven’t, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t get upset today.” Finnian shuts his eyes tight, his hands curling into fists. “If I tell you, you have to promise me you won’t get mad.”
Pinching the bridge of his nose, he sighs. “Finnian, you are making this far worse than it needs to be with all these theatrics. Please, just tell me what’s going on.”
“Well, you see…..I made a mistake.” Finnian won’t look at him, and instead, starts to fiddle with his own hands.
“What kind of mistake?” He can feel his mouth going dry, as all different possibilities start to go through his mind. He’s met someone else, and is going to be leaving him and Ronald. He’s found a new job, and has to move out of the country, leaving them behind. He’s found someone to buy his flower shop, and plans on running away with that someone else, again leaving them behind. “Just say it, Finny.”
“Y-You said you weren’t going to get mad….”
Charles takes another deep breath. “I don’t want to repeat myself, but I will, since it seems it didn’t come across clearly. I never said I wouldn’t get mad. I never said I was mad. I’m becoming irritated because you do not seem to be forthcoming with what you did wrong.” He takes another deep breath, trying to center himself, but he can feel his uneasiness begin to turn into mild annoyance. “What was your mistake?”
“….I overdrafted my account again.”
Far too many times has this happened to his lover’s account. He’s told him repeatedly to make sure that he has plenty of money in his savings account, so that if, for whatever reason, he runs out of money in his checking account, it would be covered properly. They had sat down the last time Finnian had done this, and had gone over a plan together, to make sure that Finnian wouldn’t ever run into financial trouble. But, apparently that message had not gotten through to him, as he’s now coming clean that he’s overdrafted his account. Again.
It’s only on his personal account, because the account for the business has a steady flow of income into it. Time and time again, he has to remind Finnian to pay himself, for this specific reason. Apparently, those talks have not sunk in, and now, here they were, going through the same song and dance that they went through the last time this had happened. And the time before that. And then, the time before that. This time, however, it’s too much for him.
“Charles…?” He barely hears Finnian speaking to him. “Charles, did I make you upset?”
Beyond frustrated by how the four year age difference can prove itself in matters such as these, he snaps without thinking.
It’s cold outside. Even though he’s got his hands in his pockets, he can still feel the bitter cold. He doesn’t know what to do anymore. Charles knows that it’s not necessarily Finnian’s fault, but he’s got to learn how to be responsible. He doesn’t even want to think of how bad the overdraft fees are going to be, but because he feels responsible for him, he will take care of the costs. But Finnian has got to learn the importance of balancing his checkbook. He can’t hold his hand all the time.
“Beautiful?” His head snaps up, as he sees his other lover walking down the street, heading towards him. “What the heck are you doing outside? It’s freezing!” Ronald walks up to him, cheeks rosy from the cold air, a large red scarf wrapped around his neck, and a thick wool trench coat covering his body. “Charles? What’s wrong?”
Blinking rapidly, he realizes that tears are starting to make his eyes well up. “I had to leave, because if I didn’t, I was probably going to put my fist through the wall.”
“Whoa. What the fuck happened?” Ronald asks, placing both of his hands on Charles’ biceps. “Is Finny at home? And wait, weren’t you supposed to be working late?”
A choked out sob leaves his throat, as he falls over, resting his head on Ronald’s shoulders. “I have to go back. He probably thinks I’ve left him, but I just needed to think. I feel awful right now, Ronald.”
“Did you two get into a fight?” The shock he hears in his lover’s voice makes him feel sick to his stomach. “Does this mean you’re actually human, Charles?”
Pulling a handkerchief out of his pocket, he wipes his eyes. “Ha. Yes, I have my faults too, Ronald. I’m not perfect.”
“Could have fooled me, beautiful.” Ronald teases him, wiping some of his tears away with his gloved fingers. “I’m sure Finny knows you didn’t mean it, whatever ‘it’ is.”
He nods, and blows his nose. “You’re right. Listen, I know you probably want to come home with me, but….”
“You need to go fix whatever it is that happened between you and Finny.” Ronald nods his head, and pats his shoulder. “You go take care of him. Apologize. I’ll go grab us some dinner? Even though I just had to park like a kilometer away from our place.”
Digging into his pants pocket, he pulls out his car key. “Use my car. It’s parked in the garage.”
“Serious?” Ronald asks, whistling low. “I mean, I’m not complaining, but really?”
“Go get us some Leon.” Charles pulls his wallet out, and gives Ronald a fifty quid note. “Don’t argue, or we’ll be in the same boat as Finnian and I.”
His lover nods, and accepts the money. “I should be back in forty-five minutes. That enough time to make up?” Ronald winks, hitting him with his elbow.
“More than enough.” He leans down, and kisses his lover deeply. “I love you. Thank you, gorgeous.”
“I love you too, beautiful.” Ronald touches his lips. “I expect the same kind of treatment when we finally fight.”
Smirking, he nods his head. “You got it.” Quickly turning around, he starts to jog back to their apartment. He takes the stairs, not wanting to wait for the elevator to show up, knowing that he could get to Finnian that much faster. He gets to their door, and throws it open, completely out of breath, and out of his mind. “Finny!” He shouts, noticing that his lover is no longer in the living room.
“C-Charles??” He hears Finnian’s voice come from the study. He rushes over to the door, and sees him curled up on the couch, hugging his knees tight to his chest. “Charles?? You’re back?? Pl-Please don’t be mad at me…..I’m sorry!”
He rushes over to him, dropping down to his knees. “You have no reason to apologize, my love. I’m the one that should be sorry. I shouldn’t have lost my temper and yelled at you.” He kneels down in front of him, almost too afraid to touch him. “That wasn’t very fair of me.”
“I d-deserved it,” Finnian sniffles. “I messed up. I always mess up. I hate it so much!”
Placing his hands on his lover’s cheeks, he stares into his cerulean eyes. “You do not always mess up. You just….you forget to pay yourself. You need to be better about that.” He keeps his hands on his cheeks, as he looks up at him. “But, from now on? I’m going to put you onto my bank account. We’ll have a joint checking account, so you’ll never have to worry about this again.”
“Y-You mean it??” His lover stares at him with hopeful eyes. “But, then that just means you’re taking care of me, and I’m not learning my lesson.”
It breaks his heart to hear his lover speak in such a way. “You’ve learned your lesson, my love. It’s okay. And I want to take care of you. You’re my lover, aren’t you? Isn’t that what lovers are supposed to do?”
“Then, how do I support you?” Finnian wipes his nose with his sleeve. “I can’t even keep enough money in my account!”
“You love me.” He takes Finnian’s hands into his, and holds it against his heart. “You make this beat easier. Just being with me is all I need in terms of your support.”
Tears start to fall from his lover’s eyes. “C-C-Charles!!”
Slipping his arms underneath Finnian’s butt, he lifts him up off the couch, and carries him to their bedroom. No more tears are shed, as they apologize to each other through kisses. Charles lays Finnian down on the bed, quickly undressing him, needing to be connected to him through more than just kisses right now. He can verbally apologize to him, but this act - the act of making love to him - is the best remedy for that.
He moves slow, taking the utmost care to show Finnian just what he means to him through the gentle touches of his fingers, and soft kisses that he delivers to different parts of his body. When Finnian begs him to take him, that’s when he stops, and proceeds to make love to him. The shouting that had been done before is forgotten, as they both make enough noise to wake up the neighborhood. Each loud moan of Finnian’s has him moaning louder, the two having the best kind of shouting match with one another. One loud moan, and one harsh grunt, the two are coming together, clinging to one another as their love spills forth from their bodies, through their release.
They kiss each other more, both reaffirming to one another of the love that they share. More apologies are exchanged, but both try to make it so that it isn’t that big of a deal. They both hear the front door open, the smell of food wafting in from the living room into their bedroom. Finnian sits up, his eyes vibrant, his entire body showing his excitement.
“Hello?? Anybody home~? Beautifuls?” Ronald calls out.
“In here, Ronald!” Finnian shouts, clearly beyond ecstatic at their lover’s arrival.
Ronald walks into the room, the coat he had been wearing now gone, and is only dressed in his vest, shirt and tie. “Oh, wow~. What a nice surprise to come home to!” Ronald smirks, meeting Charles’ gaze for a split second, before looking back at Finnian. “Beautiful, you seem to have lost all your clothes.” Ronald teases, winking at their lover.
“So did Charles!” Finnian giggles, and pats the bed. “You should get naked too, Ronald! Although, I smell food??”
“I”m sure it’ll be good if we have a little fun with Ronald, my love.” Charles smiles, and watches as Finnian helps Ronald get undressed. “Isn’t that right?”
“Mmm… Yep.” Ronald nods, and slides under the covers with them. “Wait, what were we talking about again?”
Their younger lover laughs, which is such a nicer sound than the sobs that he’d heard before. “Sex, Ronald!”
“My favorite subject, beautiful.” Ronald pulls Finnian towards him, and kisses him. After their kiss ends, Charles is leaning over Finnian’s shoulder, moving to be closer to Ronald. “Isn’t that right, Charles?”
“Sex is a very good subject.” He kisses Ronald, getting himself settled to be closer to Finnian. “Especially with the both of you, who I love so much.”
“We love you too, Charles!” Finnian nods his head, as he starts to kiss down Ronald’s body. “But, I also love sex!”
Both men chuckle at that admission. “We know, my love.” Charles teases him.
“Neither of us are complaining,” Ronald joins in on the teasing. “So, how about it? A pre-dinner delight?”
“Yes, please!” Finnian nods his head, giggling.
They stop talking, in favor of enjoying one another through the acts of sex. And just like Charles had said, their food was still pretty tasty, even if they ate it two hours later.
