Phitsanulok to Kanchanaburi
We woke up early to farewell the others before they left for their day tour, then packed up, had breakfast and walked down to the market for a browse. We didn't fancy anything there except some banana chips for Olga! After about an hour we were already sweating buckets so we headed to an air conditioned cafe where I ordered a chocolate milkshake to cool off. Since we had a long journey ahead of us we opted for a meal here too; we both had a fried chicken cashew but dish and the cook came out to talk to us as we ate it. Her name was June and it turned out that Phitsanulok is a very small town, she knew Mark and Mint and our hostel and she had said that usually she does the cooking classes but she was busy yesterday which is why Mint was the one to show us the spring rolls and pad Thai recipes. Olga and o agreed that of all the Thai people we'd spoken to in Thailand the best English speaker by far was June! We walked back to the hostel to pick up our bags and then took a tuk tuk to the bus station. Initially there was a bit of a struggle to find tickets for a minivan to Nakhon Sawan but eventually after trying to make us pay a huge taxi fare there were suddenly some seats available in the next van. While we waited we bought some snacks; Olga had fried rice and I went for some homemade chicken kebabs that were wrapped in envelopes made from photocopies of Thai ID cards... Being the only western looking people at the bus station we were immediately set upon by some more tourism students who asked us for on camera interviews for their class projects. Our minivan was an uncomfortable ride for 2 hours and when we arrived in Nakhon Sawan we ran straight to the ticket counter to secure the last two seats on the only bus to Kanchanaburi - talk about lucky! We quickly snack shopped again and used the horrid bus station toilets and then we were on board our next bus with purple leather seats that made our backs sweaty the entire ride down. On this bus journey we passed some interesting towns, including a huge Chinatown and enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the farmlands. At nightfall we had arrived in our final destination Kanchanaburi and we took a songthaew taxi straight to our guest house. The woman who checked us in was a right character and laughed about everything as she showed us around our little bungalow for the next two nights. We were exhausted and hungry from the trip down here so we ate a quick dinner at the guest house next door and after we had eaten we wanted to get a chocolate banana shake each but the waiter told us there was no banana so he couldn't make them. We asked for a few minutes to choose a different flavour but he never came back so eventually we just left cash on the table and walked back to our bungalow for a refreshing shower and sleep under the air conditioning.
