Eco-Friendly School Dormitory Construction

How can commercial construction for a school dormitory be eco-friendly?

  The passive house dormitory we are building in New Hope, PA recently earned its PHIUS CORE 2021 Design Certification. Passive house projects require very minimal introduced heating and cooling through airtightness, and minimal air transfers. Passive homes do have ventilation, but we control when, where, and how the air exchanges occur.

Recently, we installed a continuous vapor barrier that extends over the foundation walls and will run under the sill plates and up the exterior walls, where it will be met by a continuous air barrier. Under the vapor barrier, in the place of the traditional stone and perimeter insulation, we used Foam Glass Aggregate. This is made from 100% recycled glass. This functions as a stone base and insulation all in one. Not only is this material made from 100% recycled materials, it is 80% lighter than traditional stone, making transportation and installation a more eco-friendly process.

PHIUS 2017: The World We Want...Ahead of Schedule
