Coracle Oracle
Coracle Oracle is an exciting three part collaboration organised by Satellite Studios for Phizzfest 2013. The artists of Satellite Studios will create their ‘dream’ Coracle* in the gardens of the Kings Inns on Saturday, the completed dream Coracle will be paraded to the Royal Canal on Sunday and launched to the sound of beating drums. From Friday to Monday the Hendron Building will host a collective mixed media installation of each artists’ individual ideas for the coracle, featuring coracle blueprints, sculpture, sound, video and photography. Drop in workshop coinciding with Coracle building; ages 8 to adult are invited to take part in a mini boat-making workshop using everyday items and recycled goods. Some materials provided but please bring along bits and pieces you think suitable. Mini-boats can be launched with the dream Coracle on the canal on Sunday. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. *Coracles are traditional irish river boats made from woven willow or hazel. The coracle form is found in many cultures around the world. The artists taking part are Becky Coffey, Ceara Martyn, Ed Devane and Roisin McNamee.

Phizzfest 31/08/12 - 02/09/12
Phizzfest is a voluntary festival run every year by the people of Phibsborough, North Dublin to encourage and develop music, poetry and culture within the area. Funded partly by the Croke Park Community Fund, the aim of Phibsborough Community Arts festival is to celebrate the multiculturalism and vibrancy of this community. Theatrically, the spaces are as creative and original as you can get. Wonderland Productions 'Sylvia's Quest' was staged outside Tesco on Saturday, whilst the Mater Hospital's Pillar Room was the venue to stage Donal O'Kelly's one man show 'Catalpa'. Just goes to show you don't need the grand old stage of the Gaiety to find good theatre! Brilliant to see a real effort being made to make theatre accessible to everyone!
The Royal Canal was awash with activity too between model boat races, cruises and duck races over the weekend to entertain the whole family. September 10th will see Phibsborough Tower open its doors to local Robert Keogh's photography exhibition, a great opportunity for native Northsiders to gain some creative exposure. On top of this, the area will be alive with a multitude of spoken word events, talks, exhibitions, comedy (Maeve Higgins once more) and workshops to suit the whole community.
The only downside to this festival is the timing. The event opened the same weekend as the huge Electric Picnic in Stradbally, the mecca for 20 something festival goers in this country. Perhaps it would be beneficial to move the dates of Phizzfest around for next year, to ensure it gets the audiences and exposure it deserves? Anywho, if any of you Dubliners have a spare moment this week, pop over to Dublin 9, you won't be disapointed! Link below:
