The Phoenix Lander, which launched in August 2007, was based heavily on the failed Mars Polar Lander. Instead of visiting the south pole, it landed in Green Valley at about 68° North in May 2008. Like the Mars Polar Lander, its mission was to “follow the water”, to search for past or present water on Mars.
Phoenix operated for 157 sols through the northern spring and summer. It had a robotic arm with a scoop that found water ice under the surface of Mars. It was also equipped with a LIDAR, a laser that can be used to determine distances to objects, or as in the case of Phoenix, to detect and measure aerosols in the martian atmosphere. Throughout the mission it frequently detected and measured the altitudes of clouds, and detected falling water-ice crystals!

Opinion. The mars landers don’t get enough love.
People always forget about the Phoenix lander. Same with insight. Perhaps because they aren’t as sexy as rovers, and generally are shorter missions. But it’s still a damn shame that no one seems to remember these mars missions.
