The world is in a state of cold chaos. The media in its every form (internet, television, newspaper, radio, citizen reporting, and unfortunately fake news) is daily breaking a new story or hard news about the ongoing Covid-19 CoronaVirus Pandemic. Like I have recorded in previous instalments of this chronicle the angles of this global catastrophe is practically impossible to list.

It’s a sprawling story with layers of health, economic, mental, humanitarian, environmental, animal rights, each having its own sub-stories with an encyclopaedia of cases to examine.

The main reason for this is the world and the WHO were just so shockingly unprepared. It’s like every emergency procedure failed or was never designed for a pandemic of this scale.

Was it over-confidence in the world health systems or plain negligence? Until this question is answered there is only one thing we know without a doubt:

Something horrible happened suddenly: A disease like a monster caused the loss of about a quarter million lives, infected 4 million humans (statistics so far).

People were ordered to stay at home with some countries applying somewhat draconian measures to enforce the law.

The words ‘not ready’ is an understatement to describe the level of panic and shock caused in the mind of the general public, discovering this beast suddenly upon humanity.

Not only was humanity not mentally ready or ever expecting something like this, but the current cutting edge technology failed to contain the virus.

My point of touching on this psychological factor of severe disappointment and loss of hope?

This virus has a world war like effect. There seems nowhere to run from it. It’s everywhere.

Questions like what if this was a zombie virus? It would have spread this fast in the whole world? What if the virus emerges in top government facilities? And instantly dissolves governments. What will the public do?

So I decided to conduct a little thought experiment just to get the hang of what can we really do in a scenario such as this.

Since I’m self-isolating, and staying home, it’s not wasting my time, or fuelling fear, only trying to practically evaluate the resources at the disposal of a regular person like myself.

So here I go.

Scene One: Most people don’t live in mansions or have private acres or whole states for themselves. How much food can an average person store in their home? Suppose the virus zombie phase lasts a year. That’s 365 days in which you cannot step out of your home for any reason.

Sacks of rice? Wheat? Lentil? Powder milk? The power is out so you have to use fire, not an electric cooker. How many gas cylinders do you have to store in addition to the sacks? What about the heat from the cooking with no air conditioning?

I would take inspiration from astronauts and forget the sacks. Instead I’d store tablets of vitamins, and dry fruits and nuts. High in protein don’t need to be cooked. This would make space for cylinders, and fire should only be used to heat water.

Scene Two: Communication has been cut or destroyed by mobs of zombies, and panicked people who attacked the wealthy for their stored resources, and shelter in their enclosures. There are no phone masts, or internet. Television and radio stations suffered infections, and so there are no people to run them. Newspaper offices closed, whose going to distribute or sell the papers. Zombies certainly aren’t reading.

So what do we do with our mobile phones and laptops?

Scene Three: What if you got sick or injured?

If you are lucky your illness or injury wouldn’t be one needing an operation. Many injuries and illnesses are treatable with over the counter medications, which you can store with your prescription supply of medicines.

However, getting some training or knowledge in first aid would be a plus point.

Scene Four: Make the same preparations for your pets. Food, medicine, first aid.

Scene Five: What if humanity doesn’t survive the zombie phase and there are very little people left in a dystopian world?

I think a super memory card containing every information every recorded would become the most valuable thing on earth. Since it would be the hope to rebuilt civilizations from scratch.

That’s my take on how I’d try to survive a zombie invasion. I hope my thought experiment gets us thinking about the errors in plans that look flawless.

I’m certain we’ll survive the coronavirus pandemic. But let’s take virus outbreaks seriously because we really don’t know what might come out of nature suddenly.

Close wet markets. Close anywhere where animals are stored and then slaughtered barbarically. Stop eating wild animals. Not just on grounds of hygiene but on humanitarian grounds as well.
