Digital Declutter: The New Minimalism for Your Phone & Laptop
Hey friend!
You know that feeling when you open your phone and it’s a maze of notifications, apps you don’t use, and 4,000 photos of the same coffee? Been there.
I’m all for minimalism, but recently I realized that I’d decluttered my closet, my kitchen, and my wallet… but my phone and laptop? They were digital chaos.
If you’re craving more mental space (and more storage), here’s how I do a simple digital declutter. It’s like spring cleaning, but for your brain.
1. Start with Your Phone
Delete Old Apps Be ruthless. If you haven’t opened it in 3 months, you probably don’t need it.
Tidy Up Your Home Screen I keep only the essentials on my first screen: calls, texts, maps, music. Everything else goes in tidy folders.
Turn Off Notifications Do you really need to know every time someone likes your meme? Nope.
Clean Out Photos & Downloads Once a month, I run through my camera roll. Delete duplicates, memes, screenshots you no longer need. Bonus: Use cloud backup or an external drive for keepsakes.
2. Tackle Your Laptop
Desktop Detox My rule: No files live on my desktop for more than a week. If it’s still there, I file it properly or delete it.
Organize Folders Create clear, simple folders. I do Year > Month > Project so I can find things fast.
Unsubscribe & Uninstall Too many browser extensions or old software? Ditch the ones you never use. Same for newsletters, unsubscribe ruthlessly.
Back It Up Use cloud storage or an external drive. Peace of mind is priceless.
3. Why It Matters
Digital clutter is invisible, but it drains your focus. I swear, once I did this, my phone felt lighter, and so did my mind. Plus, I find I’m less distracted and more intentional with my time.
My Takeaway
Minimalism isn’t just about living with fewer things, it’s about fewer distractions, too. Start small. Tidy up one folder today, one app tomorrow. Your brain will thank you, and so will your storage space!
