Evaluation week 10

For this week I finalised my ideas and create my final ideas for my magazine to make up the pages. on Monday I spent the day creating some final ideas and changing the layout so I can add to indesign so I can change finalise the pages and later print the magazine out. To do this I created 10 more ideas some that I already did the week before but didn't post them.

To start this week off airbrushed the skin off the model so it covers up any bruises and makes the skin flawless to show how photos can be distorted and feel like they have filters on them. I then proceeded to add a screenshot of my snapchat and then change the blend mode to screen so it removes the lack screen from the camera so I can make it appear as if its taking the photo of the model.

I then moved onto making the a page which uses stereotypical colours of pink as I found a pink selfie frame which I placed over a photo and added rainbow lights to show the reflection of the light within the mirror and camera to make it look more realistic. For this I also added filters of an ICY to make it more lighter and blue to contrast the pink. I loved how this piece turned out and I feel that I would go perfectly next to the front inside cover.

After that I then proceeded to continue with the theme of using the camera to show media and decided to take a photo of my iPhone camera and using the same method I decided to blend it to remove the black background but instead of adding a outer border to the screenshot I decided to add a colour insert in the shade of green to make it more effect and show how stereotypes can come from photos being filtered and distorted into something we aspire to be and not the real representation of ourselves

Another idea I had was to create a image that shows social media icons scattered around a portrait. I decided to think about the style and colour of the poster and felt that I could use a black and white portrait that uses a butterfly filter and then add the social media icons of TikTok, snapchat, instagram, Facebook and twitter in colour to emphasise them and make them standout. with this I also added coloured hearts above them to show how we like thing on different apps because of how fake they are and its the life we want to have and who we want to be

I then created another photo using black and white but this time I used a dual tone with half the photo in black and white and half the photo in colour so it seems that

the last couple of photos I created involved using the likes notification from instagram aswell as the followers and comments notification. for one of the pieces I was inspired by Alice in wonderland with the clocks and use that as a background with a rainbow overlay with the subject and smoke over the whole idea to give it a mysterious effect and make it effective. Another one I did along the same lines was taking a photo from my photoshoot and then added the likes, hearts and followers button to the side of the model with glowing lights to make it seem simple but effective.

I then moved on to using photoshop with using a photo from my Photoshoot and using a gradient in the colour blue and chasing the opacity to make it lighter and see though so the image can still appear I then added another layer where I used another gradient in which I had the area on the outside in the colour black to make it darker and I added extra black areas to make the blue stand out and become vibrant. After that I then proceed to make the back page before the back inside page in which I used a green filter and added rainbow lights to make it stand out and to show how women are sexualised and objectified in the media.

Finally once that was done I edited some of the images out the magazine and edited some of the pages so in total I have 106 pages in a 53 double side single pages not including the front and back cover and the inserts. After I was satisfied with it I then printed it out and trimmed it down so I can send it off to be binded

Week 9

This week was a stressful week as I realised I only had 1 week left to complete my magazine because of this I tried to plan as much in as possible this week by booking the photo studio for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning so I have some photos to work with next week and the remaining of this week.

To start this week off I decided to add two quotes I created on canva. The first one I selected was a quote from Alice in wonderland which the Cheshire Cat says. I thought using this quote would fit perfect as it can signify a meaning that everything and everyone has different opinions and can see things in a different way to other but it doesn’t mean they are crazy or wrong. By using this can show that it’s okay to be different. Another quote I used was a marvel quote by Peggy carter which says I know my value, anyone else opinion doesn’t really matter which I thought was a good idea to use as it show meaning and that you should value yourself before anyone and that the only opinion that counts is your own.

After that I then proceeded to use procreate to create digital drawing/ illustration of phones to connote a message that we are not objects. For this I created two ideas one where I used a hand to hold the phone with text inside to show a message in a different way that we aren't object and a yes and no button as if the person is thinking about which one to press. For this piece I am proud of how the colours are clear and that I managed to create a gradient in the nails and warp the text on the phone screen in big and small writing.

after that I thought about the layout of my magazine and though out I can use the space which lead me to creating a A3 landscape piece of a large drawing of an old iPhone either a 4 or 5 this is because I wanted to show the home button and the charging point. I then thought about having a portrait coming out of it but then realised that it wouldn't really show anything to my theme which then led me to adding text in a 3D format which says 'whoever controls the media controls the mind' which can suggest that the media has warped our minds so much we can't tell what is real and what is fake within the media industry.

I then moved on to creating some simplistic photos where I didn't have much do to. I chose an old image that I took of me in a dress and a full face makeup and then added glowing lights to it and angel wings on the back of the portrait which can suggest that all girl should be treated like angels and feel like they are happy instead of feeling victimised or sexualised because of what they wear or how they look like. this can also suggest that they can start to make changes for themselves.

I then used the studio to take further photos for my magazine in which I can use to create further imagery for my magazine. I did this photoshoot over 2 days where I was able to select different outfits and use different backgrounds In the colours of red, purple, grey and blue which is why I booked Studio A as its the only studio that has coloured backgrounds. I chose these colours as I felt that they would standout and make the portrait and subject pop. For these idea I planned out my ideas by creating a pinterest board for the poses and object I could use

Overall I took 160 photos in which most of them were the same with different angles. For these photos I created a Hollywood look by using sunglasses and red lips with eyeliner and I enchanted my freckles. I also created a more natural look with hints of blush and brown eyeshadow with mascara. I created these looks as I felt that they would go well with the outfits I chose which was a skirt, flares, joggers and a couple tank tops and a dress.

after that I then moved on to creating pieces that I could add which I spent the rest of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday doing. For one of them I used 3 portraits within one piece and layered it with using circles and plastic wrap which I got to experiment with the style and format as I used photoshop and wrapped the circles to create interesting shapes to add the photos to. I love this piece as I reminds me of ladybirds and nature due to the spots.

I then moved onto using procreate and photo room. I selected the images I took of makeup products and then added each one to photo room separately so I can remove the background and make them PNG's so it would be easier to work. I then added them to procreate and remove the watermark and then positioned it along the sides so it would appear like the hands are coming out of the screen and brushing the page with makeup.

I then added all of these to InDesign and then thought about what I could do next and then removed the text from the eyes and added the text separately to a A3 document on Canva where I added vectors of eyes to signify that the eyes link to the the piece before of eyes and drawings of eyes. After that I also added another quote which can be used for the back inside back cover which I also created on Canva. This quote I used was a quote by Thanos and states that the hardest choices require the strongest wills. For this idea I used shapes, a watercolour background and flowers as I wanted to try something different than the other quotes in my magazine.

I then also created a back cover on procreate where I used the nebula filter in the shades of pink and purple and changed the blend so it looked blue and added a background colour of black so when I add an image of the chains in it would blend in. I also changed the opacity of the image to about 70% so the gradient would still be shown and blend together beautifully. After that I started to use some of the imagery from my photoshoot in different ways. One way I did it was drawing a collage of phones and adding some of the images to them which I felt was a different way to present them whilst also making them stand out. This piece included 7 images.

After that I then had an idea to show how the media is just a representation of reality as stereotypes are made from consumption and the thing people see around us. I used an idea where I had an image and airbrushed it and darkened it by adding highlights and shadows and changing the brightness and adding a frame and words that say online which can suggest that from the things we see online we can start to look up to them and want to be like them even though it fake and just what they want to be represented as and not who they are.

After that I made two more designs one where I added an overlay of flowers on top of one of my images that already has flowers in it and another image where I used the the lollipop and changed the colour to a fish eye photo of the sky and added it to the lollipop and removed the excess whilst changing the opacity and blend. I also added cards around it to show surrealism and that stereotypes can from ideas we base around things we see from society and the media. The idea of the cards came from inspiration from Alice in wonderland as I thought it would fit in with this piece beautifully

Evaluation week 6

this week I went back to creating ideas and posters that I can use in my magazine and also refreshed myself with indesign and how it work and what format I could use for my pages in my publication/ magazine. To start this week off I presented my presentation and talked about what I did over easter and where my project is going and what I plan to do next. because of this and my ideas, the feedback I got was helpful as when I showed my front cover it looked like something out of a horror movie which led me to think about how I can incorporate the theme of horror into showing stereotypes of women.

After that I then began creating some ideas. some of the ideas included using my own social media account and taking screenshots of them and using it as a frame so I can make my design seem like the portrait is coming out of the frame by letting it sit on the edge with the feet dangling down. this ide shows how instagram is what you want to show people and it doesn't show the real you as the media blurs you personality. because of this idea, it lead me to then create a piece involving YouTube where I have the letters from the keyboard coming of the search bar and floating around the screen. I created this piece to show that many things on YouTube can be seen as fake as people brand themselves which can lead to stereotyping.

I then proceeded to make a collage which is a continuation from the collages I made during easter but instead of using a mirror or playing cards, I used something relating to the media which is an old mobile phone which wa the centre image and I used random elements which I searched up to make it unrealistic as possible and crazy. the elements I used involved a building of Streaks Pauls cathedral, the moon, white orchids, stars, another white flower, creased paper for the background and marble paper with the opacity changed. this collage is topped with the quote its okay to unfollow people in real life which suggest that we need to take a break from seeing all the negative things as there is more to life that social media and being on our phones and if we stop for a minute we can realised it and look at the world around us and the beauty of it

I then started to create a piece which I had on my mind for a long which I used procreate. for this piece I drew 6 drawing of different types of bodies where they are positioned in different ways and uses different colours. by doing this idea can show people that we shouldn't be stereotyped based on what we look like because we all have different characteristics which makes us special and we should be proud of it and embrace who we are no mater what size we are as I feel that in the media they only show skinny models which can make people feel insecure. The colours I chose was blue, green, pink, red, yellow, purple and orange for a jacket and black to help it stand out.

after that I then proceeded to plan out what I want my magazine to include on each page and though I would also be using the experiment I created before as they are some of my favourite pieces I've done. i then moved on to experimenting with InDesign where I experiemnted with text and some imagery. to start this off I wrote a quote ' is this your only window to the world ? which I will add to my piece that I created of pink tv's. This idea I created where I added a image of pink roses to inside the text to make it stand out and less boring and more fun and vibrant. although it was fun to make the process was stressful and slowly as the programme wasn't working aswell as I thought it would.

I then created 3 more which included using illustrator for one as I created text where it was wrapped into a shape using the envelope distort. To this I cut the shape up into 3 shapes to fit each word in and wrote the phrase more than a woman and hide each text one behind the text using the arrange tool and then using the distort to make it appear as if the text was the shape. After that I wanted the pink shape to be hind so I copied all the text into Indeisgn and then added the shape into it so it can be behind the text and make a circle which look effective and stands out on the page.

I then wanted to move on from text based work which led me to create a piece where I experimented with images and the layout. For this idea I used Polaroids and sticky tape so it look like it was stuck on the page and inserted images into them to show that the page can be 2 images instead of just one. I then added a background to make it standout and the phrase everyone sees what you appear to be a few really know who you are which I made an outline so I can enlarge it and make format it how it want it to be

Evaluation Photoshoot

This week I came up with a name for my magazine and started to come up with typography concepts that I could potentially use for my magazine. I settled on two names Mariposa and Rare but slightly leaning towards Mariposa as it sounds more elegant and sophiscated. with this I also created a flatplan for my magazine so I know the layout I want to use and I have a rough idea of how my magazine will look like. I created about 54 pages which is a rough idea of how many pages I want to include but might do more considering the pace I'm working at.

I then proceeded to plan some photoshoot ideas so I can use primary images in my work and not just secondary images. with these ideas I took inspiration from the artist's techniques I found out and also browsed Pinterest for ideas and props I could potentially use. For my final outcome of this I came up with many different ideas which involved writing text on my face, stomach and hand in eyeliner, fineliner and eyeshadow which was hard as I had to have a steady hand so It would look straight and not wonky or distorted. Each of these images that I took shows a different message and can help to promote stereotypes and the impact of them in a different way.

The next Photoshoot idea I decided to use LED lights as a prop and hold them in intriguing ways so it can create beautiful photograph that I can later add to my magazine or put into photoshop to create beautiful posters and imagery. With this idea I used a variety of different positions where I was holding the lights in both my hands near my corso, in my hands near my face, close together and wide apart, and having my hands at different lengths so the colours can be the main attention. The positions I captured was close up shots and medium close up shots of my face and hands so it can show facial expressions and hand gestures within the photographs

My third idea was inspired by one of the artists I looked at, Gillian Wearing and I asked my peers, family and friends to take photographs of them holding up a sign that is relating to a stereotypes that they have experienced, been called or can be associated with. By doing this idea can show the stereotypes that women have been called and are around in the media within the western world. I feel that this can also help to empower people to not to confine to these stereotypes and can help them to stand up and challenges these ideologies of what women are expected to be like or act or wear.

My last Photoshoot I continued with using text but instead of just holding up a sign with a straight face I decided to create outfits out of signs that I printed out which has one word text on them and sellotape them together front and back to make a dress. I also used post it notes with sharpie to write names women have been called in capital letters. By using capitals can help to show the importance of trying to stop these labels and portraying women in a negative manner. I then proceeded to write shhh… on my hand and take photos of it near my lips so it can show that a message that women are normally stereotypes to be quite and submissive as they don’t have a voice, but now it’s slowly starting to change.
