ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK IN THE CONSERVATION LAB AT ARCHIVES II

The Conservation Lab at Archives II recently hosted two Alternative Spring Break interns. The interns worked on a rehousing project for lantern slides. Guided by our photo conservators, they helped to treat, sleeve, and box lantern slides from the Army Air Force. And as an added bonus they found some interesting images!

I am currently writing an article on the history of the exhibition of paper negatives, to present in a conference late this year. One of my goals is to evaluate which light sources conservators are using, especially when the negatives are backlit. Although it can be relatively easy to find information on exhibitions featuring paper negatives (in exhibition catalogs and/or in some online collection websites), there is less information available out there about how that was done. The published case studies are surely only a fraction of what is done in practice to exhibit these objects. That is why I ask for your contribution. Katrin Pietsch and I were invited by Neon Art Conservation to give a lecture and a two-day workshop on the conservation of colour slides. It will take place next September in Portugal and will deal with the treatment of colour slides that have showed mould damage.

A "behind-the-scenes" look at our unrolling of "La Merced, Quito" (Church, Quito, Ecuador). With the help of our photo conservator @nyplconservation, we gently took this chromogenic print or "c-print" (the technical term for color photographs) out of its tube and used weights to keep it flat. Bark spoke about framing practices that put photographs at risk, and practices that protect photos from environmental insult.
