1 Camera, 1 Lens, 1 Film ? Digital photography industry is evolving fast and it is always tempting to go for the latest and greatest however I would advise against it. It is important to use the right tool for the job, on the other hand everyone will agree that no gear is going to make you a better photographer. Having a lot of different equipment is going to distract you from your photography. It can easily become a tedious task to choose the "right" camera and lens before a holiday, a photo walk or a photo session. Having a lot of gears with you won't help either. Carrying a lot of equipment becomes heavy, tiring and again distracting. If you have to stop to change your lens or camera you might miss an interesting photo. It is also very difficult to master your camera when you own many. My piece of advice is to stick to one camera, one lens and even 1 film stock or 1 post process for consistency. The direct benefit is a great improvement in your photography. By shooting 1 camera, you will quickly master it, know the camera menus, know the camera limitations and find a creative way around it. The same thing applies to the lens you use. Generally I plead in favor of prime lenses unless you are a wildlife/sports photographer, but my favorite field is the so-called "street photography" where 3 focal length are dominant : 28, 35 and 50 mm. I will not go into details of which focal length is better but whatever works for you, just use it extensively until it becomes a second nature. You will, soon, preview your photo even before raising the camera to your eye. Regarding the fact of using 1 film stock or 1 post-processing, you may find it a little extreme but for the sake of consistency I believe this will help your body of work. Of course you can still change from time to time to spice up the routine, I do so. If you manage to apply these rules to yourself, you will find that your vision transcends any consideration about gear and this will greatly impact your photography. Of course it is important to use equipment that inspires you to take photos. May this be your smartphone, DSLR, mirrorless, film camera... I've tried to apply this to myself, streamlining my equipment to two 35mm cameras and one medium format TLR. I am currently using one camera/lens/film setup everyday and while I'm still far from where I would like to be, I have noticed a definite improvement in my photography. Do you own a lot of gears ?
