The Beauty in Shooting Different Camera Angles
Photography is a language without a manuscript and the more you practice it, the more you learn it. Since the last 2 centuries, there have been outstanding developments in the visual medium. Nowadays, everyone yearns to buy good cameras and become a photographer but art comes to those who accept it. Here we’ll talk different camera angles. If you enrol in a photography loyalty program where they provide you with the basic photography course, you will realise that angle is something that you will learn in the initial days itself. So here are some beginner lens angles you must try out while experimenting with your DSLR:
Close Up:
Nowadays, there’s a poor version called ‘Selfie’. Jokes apart, it’s an interesting angle to try out. When your subject is a human, you can select the face for your lens as it’s an interesting start to the angle. But it’s not as trivial as it may seem. Since the face covers most part of the lens, it will highlight the details depending on the Exposure, Shutter Speed and Aperture (the first two mostly). So you have to see that you aren’t making it look bloated and ugly. Capture it with as much finesse as you can. Take multiple shots with different settings to get the best results.
Wide angle shot:
This is to create a picturesque view of a landscape, skyline or multiple things in a wide spectrum in just in one frame. A macro lens is perfect to catch those beautiful wide-angled framed. Just take an example of the sky. Such an endless, blue beauty no wonder people catch it so beautifully. No there can the mesmerising mountains, tranquil birds or the simple limitless sky itself you will slowly realise how beautiful it can be. Try to capture during different day times.
Low-Angle shot:
The first observation you will get is an establishment of power or dominance of the subject. You see tall trees, monuments, humans, animals or anything taken from a low angle makes it look stronger. When you see photographers covering a theatrical performance, they would take photos of a character from a lower angle to establish its prowess. Try to capture from different low angles to see which image speaks to you the best.
High-Angle Shot:
This is exactly the opposite of the Low-Angle shot. The purpose of this type of shot is to make the subjects appear smaller and diminished. If done creatively, it also generates a certain kind of emotion. This can be connoted as representing the subject lesser powerful or not fierce.
OTS- Over The Shoulder
The language of photography is so beautiful that without words it speaks wonderfully to the beholder. The OTS shot is an example of that. This is to establish where the character is looking or to belong to his perspective while taking the shot. It can also be used to establish the eye line to affirm his direction his/her sight and create a conversational flow. It becomes more of an observational type of angle as Oscar Winner cinematographer Roger Deakins says.
These 5 angles will help you master the art of photography. Learn from your mistakes, find out your own perspectives and build a relationship with your camera.
