Hey there! I just saw that you were the editor of Phroth. Literally 90% of my friends are Phrothies from back in the day, including my current roommate (I think he designed the Jester). We all ended up in the same part of Brooklyn, sort of by accident. I contributed an almost-funny comic about a banana once, so I like to think of myself as an honorary Phrothie. Nice to see that it's still going strong and attracting such talented folks. All the best! Ken

That's awesome! Welcome to the Phroth Phamily. I've run in to people with Phroth connections in the most random places since moving to NYC. I was wearing a Phroth shirt when I walked through FAO Schwartz and one of the girls working at the make-your-own-muppet booth told me she was in Phroth Phest about 8 years ago. And I actually found your blog through a fellow Phroth alum, Dan Hopper, on Twitter. 

I was lucky enough to have Phroth's centennial anniversary fall during my senior year while I was editor in chief so I got to meet a bunch of the super-cool Phroth alums who are now living in Brooklyn/NYC when we invited them to do a show at Penn State for us and I've stayed in touch with them through the internet ever since. It's a great magazine, and yeah, it's still going strong...or at least that's what the current staff tells me, anyway. (Oh, also, I'd be remiss not to mention that Phroth is on Tumblr now).

Oh and hey, if you ever spot me at one of the Phroth alums' shows at UCB or whatever, don't hesitate to say hi. :-)

I'm cleaning up an old hard drive and I just found a folder of my transfer application essays from when I was planning on leaving Penn State after my freshman year.

If I had transfered...

I would never have met my current boyfriend

I would never have become editor-in-chief or production editor of Phroth

I would never have become friends with all the people who I consider my best friends today

I am so glad I stayed.

CIA finds Bin Laden through Facebook pictures

Notorious terrorist and leader of Al Qaeda Osama Bin Laden came to an end yesterday when members of the United States Army stormed a cave in the mountains of Afghanistan where Bin Laden was hiding after receiving a tip from the CIA on some breakthrough evidence.

“Bin Laden got sloppy with what he was posting to Facebook,” said CIA spokesperson Rashard McMillan. “He was tagged in a series of pictures from a new recruit mixer last weekend. In one of a particularly embarrassing failed attempt at a kegstand, we noticed some familiar details of the rock formation of the cave the party was thrown in. From there is it a simple matter of organizing a strike team.” “I told him to be careful about what he posted to Facebook, you never know who is looking at it,” said Bin Laden’s mother. “I am very disappointed in him.”

Bin Laden shocked the world six months ago when he created a Facebook page for himself and set up a twitter account, @DeathToAmerica.

“It was a necessary move for him,” said McMillan. “More and more terrorist cells have been stringing up all over the world lately and recruitment is getting harder. Al Qaeda needed to maintain an edge in appealing to today’s Arab youth. It’s not easy getting kids to blow themselves up you know.”

While Bin Laden has frequently updated his twitter account with tweets such as, “The great Satan, can’t pass universal healthcare. ROFL!” he has generally been conservative with his personal contact information, listing his current city as “you’ll never find me, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah.”

His Facebook page also says that he is interested in “young impressionable Muslim men” and that he was looking for “friendship.” Strangely his religious belief is listed as “none of your business” and his favorite quote is “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”

His privacy settings were also at their highest, but reportedly he will accept a friend request from anyone, including Commander of U.S. Operations in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus.

“That’s just bad form,” said McMillan.

The breakthrough shows a growing trend in the CIA using social networking sites to gather intelligence. Last week they discovered long-range ballistic missiles in North Korea after Kim Jong-il posted pictures of them in an album entitled “Ballistic Missiles. FUCK YEAH!”

Can I just say that I LOVED reading about the new Phroth positions yesterday and how 3 of 4 are now held by chicks? Seriously, made my day! You guys really did such a great job after I left, I wish I could go back and have been more involved.

I know, isn't it crazy?! With the exception of Head Writer, the leadership positions in Phroth have been so female dominated these past few years. And it's especially interesting, I think, considering that the staff is so male dominated otherwise. I haven't done the math, but I'm pretty sure Kevin was the only Editor-in-Chief with a penis in like the past 7 or 8 years or something like that.

Also! Did you know that next year's jester is also a chick? Nicole Foley who will be managing editor next year also won Phroth's jester competition. Pretty cool, right?
