“Ares is the ONLY Greek god to not have single myth stating or even IMPLYING that he assaulted anyone!”
Harpina and Phylonome:
i like ares, he has a few myths that really show him to be a swell boy. he has the ultimate aura farm, the cool helmet. all of it. He has a lot of myths that show him to be an interesting and respectable character. but man I do not like the insane generalizations of him nowadays. cuz it reflects on some very dark truths about our fucked up current beliefs. Like, he raped Phylonome. All sex by deception is rape. like cmon. cmon. "Phylonome, the daughter of Nyktimos and Arkadia, was wont to hunt with Artemis; but Ares, in the guise of a shepherd, got her with child" -Plutarch, Greek and Roman Parallel Stories Also, this isn't even saying she chose to sleep with what she thought was a shepherd. the fact she tries to kill the children does not help ares case. Like, I'm not saying you need to use this story to reflect on Ares all the time, it's one tale of many over the course of multiple civilizations, Plutarch and Homer are so far apart. but we don't need to like, say Ares has no rape myths. or try to contrast or compare him to other gods.
i will continue to like Ares and his stories, as I do other gods but I will also treat Phylonome like the victim she is.
hey maybe theres a version of phylonome where its fully consensual and its just not on topostext or theoi.
Threat
With this case and the chance that Ares was the one who slept with Atalanta, I wonder if Artemis made a "No Ares Allowed" rule.
Artemis wishes for Zeus and Aphrodite to stop fucking with her hunters and gets her wish...but forgot to include Ares.
Monkey's Paw Finger curls
Ares in the guise of the shepherd catching the eye of Phylonome who's deciding between breaking her chasity vow to be a Hunter of Artemis or sleeping with the shockingly hot shepherd...she decides to sleep with the shepherd and gets knocked up with twins
Artemis: For the love of...ARES!
Ares: Yes?
Points at Phylonome in the process of throwing her children in a lake
Artemis: WHY!?
Ares: Oh! Um, I wanted to see the Tagea feast dedicated to me but didn't want to make things awkward by appearing as Ares so I came down as a shepherd and...may or may not have caught her eye and we kind of hit it off and...yeah.
Artemis draws bow with furiously murderous intent at Phylonome
Ares: Waitwaitwait, why not save the twins and spare her?
Artemis: Why the fuck would I do that? I know you well enough to know that you didn't force yourself on her so she made her choice!
Ares murmurs under her breath: Not that it would've stopped you either way...
Artemis continues drawing bow with furiously murderous intent
Ares: Wait I still have a deal! If you do I'll let you have temples with the Amazons. They would probably love having you as a fellow patron.
Artemis taps her foot before sighing
Artemis: Fine! But those temples better be fucking marvelous.
Artemis transforms into a wolf and rescues the two twins and brings them in the care of a shepherd named Gyliphos who names them Lykastos and Parrhasios
“Ares doesn’t have any myths where he assaulted women” look up Harpina and Phylonome.
Can we also stop saying Ares never sexually assaulted anyone? I've seen at least two well sources posts that show that he did rape women.
Harpina and Phylonome especially stick out to me. Phylonome was a followers of Artemis and likely would’ve preferred to remain a virgin and Ares had no reason to disguise himself as shepherd. Harpina’s sisters are all said to be kidnapped and raped by the gods and there is no reason to think Ares didn’t kidnap Harpina as well.
Just bc the word “rape” isn’t used doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
