Author: gaelicspirit
Summary: Not all missions are a success, no matter how good Mac is at improvising. One failure hits Mac particularly hard and before he's able to re-balance, the team is in the middle of another crisis—this time Mac's ready to die before he fails to protect another innocent. Unless Jack has something to say about it.
Words: 30,962
Genre: Angst, hurt and comfort
Main character in turmoil: Macgyver
Comment by reader: For two reasons, 1 being that there’s just not enough TV Mac whump, and 2, Gaelicspirit being the queen of whump fanfiction!

Summary: When a hunt goes sideways, the brothers are hurt and lost in the northern Minnesota woods. They have only each other and their skills to get them out...and they aren't alone. They are being tracked by the 'perfect hunter'.
Words: 71,858
Genre: Angst and drama
Main character in turmoil: Dean Winchester
Comment by reader: Okay I know I’ve said it a gazillion times, but this is probably one of my favorite Supernatural fics ever. The author writes up the Winchesters’ characters so well it is stunning (better than some of the show's writers, I'd say...). The plot is thrilling, perfectly composed, the scenes from the boys' past so well woven into it, and the psychological insight into the author’s characters and their relationship is downright brilliant. Oh and the whump... Goodness there’s SO MUCH WHUMP! (I type it in caps so you can all see it lol).
Nightmares Revisited

Author: Kelcor
Summary: A retelling of the classic pilot episode Nightmares, with lots of Mac whump and fatherly comfort from Jack.
Words: 66,354
Genre: Family, hurt and comfort
Main character in turmoil: MacGyver
Comment by reader: I just got hooked on MacGyver the reboot last month, and I think it’s safe to say that this show’s fandom is mostly made of whumpers, or so I’ve read. Love the relationship between Mac and Jack, Bozer and Riley, but somehow something seems to be missing in the remake, the relationships aren’t as strong as they should be, not sure if it’s the acting or just a chemistry thing. This story is just what I needed though, the writing delivered a genuinely caring father figure for Mac. The story is filled with so many lovely Mac emotional/physical whump scenes with plenty of Jack comforting.

Words: 97,624
Genre: Angst
Main character in turmoil: Erik, the Phantom
Comment by reader: No words to describe how amazing this fanfiction novel is, other than the below excerpt which kills me every time... I’d tell you to read this but not for the whump it carries because that would be degrading for such a piece of writing, read it because this is truly a work of art that will touch you so deeply and leave you speechless for days...
Excerpt:
“Ignoring his words, I took a deep breath and positioned the violin beneath my chin. The room and the people within it disappeared as I placed the bow to the string. It was as though I no longer existed in a mortal body. Greater than flesh and blood, I didn't play the violin or merely imitate what I had crudely heard once before. I was sound, I was string, and I was wood. Tempo became my heartbeat, melody my blood, and themes my bones. The instrument and I were one, perfectly blended, free of barriers and ridicule. I forgot myself, forgot the room, forgot the pain that had nailed me to the earth.
Lost—or perhaps at last found—I allowed the music to guide me, lead me to the very core of my existence. I felt as though I had played the piece from the moment I took my first breath, though in the same moment my heart beat as though if I neglected one note I would destroy the world.”

Comment by reader: Firstly, you know it’s gonna be a beautiful story if it’s written by gaelicspirit, that’s just a rule of physicas, it’s like gravity, like the earth rotating around the sun, like how the moon isn’t made out of cheese dammit! #breathein #breatheout.
Okay, so this incredible phenomena of an author has a way of making me feel like I'm in the room with those two boys, she explains the furniture, the lighting, the atmosphere, the sounds, it's just so overwhelming I can lose sense of reality and almost smell the dust in the air they're breathing. Apart from that skill, I don't think I've ever read a fanfiction that shows you the strength, humor, dedication, and love between Dean and Sam like how she does with this story and the sequels that follow. There are scenes which literally make me laugh out loud, Dean's punch-lines and Sam's annoyance, and their fighting scenes, I literally tense up, I can almost envision their voice tones, their puffs of air between sentences, their frowns and all, the author just makes it so easy for us to imagine it all...
And the whump you ask? Oh it’s on a completely different level homie...
Note: This story has a bunch of sequels that follow, with new author-owned characters you’ll learn to love just as much as the original ones. You. must. read!
