Do you know how much cd's/tapes tend to contribute with artists like Harry? Or are most physical sales on vinyl now? I saw some numbers thrown around on reddit for how much limited vinyl was available/sold but obviously thats just 1 part. I'm so curious to find out his eventual pre sale figures. Things have changed since the last release, but he's obvioudly more famous so not sure what to expect!
Vinyl is still the leading physical format. In the UK in 2021, vinyl accounted for nearly a quarter of all album purchases (5 million).
Cassette tapes is still a pretty gimmicky limited edition format but it's growing massively year on year (around 20% growth from 2020 to 2021). According to the BPI, around 190,000 tapes were purchased in the UK in 2021 - the highest amount since 2003.
For CD sales in the UK it's more about a big slowing of the rate of decline rather than growth. But in the US in 2021 CD sales showth growth for the first time in 17 years and DOUBLED sales compared to 2020.
Overall, physical format is having a huge rennaissance and contributes significantly to the chart success of all the big-selling (as opposed to just streaming) artists' such as Adele, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and 'classic'/legacy artists like ABBA, Fleetwood Mac etc.
