The biggest problem with Life of Pi
Is that fact that people don’t pay enough attention to the ending, in the end when Pi summarizes the story, replacing the animals with humans and that being the published story, isn’t supposed to be a moment where you see the truth, yes Pi and Richard Parker were always ment to be mirrors of each other- with Richard Parker being a stand in fo Pi’s struggle with his morals and religion during his times of struggle. When you choose which narrative is the correct one you undermine the narrative that fuels the duality of the tiger and the man, what we see is much more of a Schrödinger’s cat situation, with Pi being the box metaphorically, where Religious ideology is the poison and Richard Parker being the cat, if the animal story is true then that would be the case where the cat is alive, if the official narrative is the truth then that’s the case in which the cat is dead, and Pi pushed aside his morals in favour of survival.
But when acknowledging this it’s important to remember the philosophy of Schrödinger’s cat, as long as that box is closed, the cat is neither alive nor dead, instead it exists somewhere in between, not possibility’s are equally true and false and you’ll never know without opening the box, and the only one with the key is Pi.
“In both stories the ship sinks, my entire family dies, and I suffer.” “Yes, that’s true.”
“Thank you. And so it goes with God.”
Finished the Life of Pi book for Humanities class. The contrast between the first and second half of the book… the ending…
So quick sketches to get it off my mind (ノ_;)
The Boy or the Tiger?
Can you choose between them?
Are you the boy, forced to do horrible things? Become animalistic, ruthless and relentless in your desire to live. Powerless as a lifeboat in a vast ocean but able to whether the storm.
Or is it the tiger? A primal force that you can live with, if only you can learn to understand each other, to separate yourselves between clearly marked spaces.
Can you water down your experience to make your life more palatable to outsiders? Can you stay true to yourself, your history and culture, in a foreign land? Will the part of you that remembers where you came from leave as soon as you set foot in a new country? The part of you that made it possible to survive the journey.
The tiger is gone, in its place is a housecat, familiar, domestic. The long-suffering playmate of children with its kitten-like mews and chirps has killed the beast that once struck fear into your heart with its deadly silence .
Was it ever a part of you or just something you journeyed with for a while, a lifetime ago.
